A bear hunting adventure in Maine!!

so last thursday we loaded up and headed to maine. we were invited to run some baits that were suppose to have some nice 300 lb bears on them. after checking the first bait bait and 2 dogs coldtrailing that the other 2 couldnt smell we picked up the older dogs and headed to another. got a good strike on the way and dumped on that, after an hour we dicided to pick up dogs as they were running a small bear and we were after a larger one. it was about 10:30 we checked the next bait. hoping to look on the camera and see what age track we had and what size bear.. we were not able to as the camera was ripped off the tree sometime after 1:00am. so.. the dogs are led in and are trailing out. cold trailing. we were able to listen for about a half hour then decided to drive around to another road. we had lost gps reading of the dogs. as we drove around and got back into range, the gps beeped and said the dogs had treed. i checked telemetry, as the mountain we were running on was full of rock and ledge, and half thinking the dogs were stuck. No tree switches.. hmmm... all 4 dogs were treed still on the gps. so we drove up a side road and got within 500 yards of the dogs.. couldnt say for sure that we herd them. we suggested that we head in and when we got there, to call back on the radio and let the others know what we had going on. about 200 yards from the dogs.. we heard them and knew they were looking at something in a HOLE. called back on the radio and told them to start heading in.. they were bayed in a rock cave. just as i put the radio back, i herd the bear blow and the dogs were going insane.. it was pretty exciting. so we leashed the dogs so none of them would get pulled in with the bear and waited for the rest of the crew. there was a small peep hole on the side that you could stick your head in and see the bear, that was where the shot would have to be taken. 11 yr old boy with his dads 357 stuck his head in the hole and pow. he killed himself a bear. took 4 mens might to pull the brute out of the hole, and took over 2 hours for 4 men to get him 500 yards back to the truck. he tipped the scale at 345 fully dressed ( guy at store told us scale was 15-20 lbs off) so not sure of actual weight. but he was big. all in all was a very adventurous day. here are a few pics. enjoy!

It was a great hunt and with some of the best friends you could ever ask for. Kelly and Jared have some superb dogs there and they are game producers wherever they go, great job Kells! The neatest thing for me was looking at the size of Chris's eyes when he finally got his head far enough into the hole to see the bear looking at him! It was his first bear and what a dandy it was with a heck of a story to go with it. He will be talking about it for years to come. That is what hunting is all about to me and seeing the excitment in that boys eyes was great. Thanks for coming over and bringing the dogs to help get it done!

hey mike, marge will be 5 in october. she has had a rough little life. being hit by car last september, broke her pelvis in 3 places and dislocated her left hip.. then in december she had a growth started on her side.. it grew and would drain.. had it removed in march.. was 2 masses the size of my fist attatched to body wall, got results back on that.. was NOCARDIOSIS. a bacterial infection from the soil. she has healed up from that and has been feeling ok. wish i had a few more like her thats for sure!!

WOW, I'd say she's a tough hound!!

I'll be looking forward to seeing those pics of winter cats treed and/or bayed up. That looks exciting.
