Sand hills Game Lands
I'VE NOTICED in the last couple of weeks, the wildlife commission,AKA,GAME WARDENS have put up no motorized vehicle traffic signs up where as you have no excess to creeks and streams where we always drop the hounds in the large blocks of land. These excesses being closed means you would have to walk a hound a mile or 1000 yards to get to a creek or branch head to drop. Most of the roads that they had closed along time ago have been mostly respected by everyone in the past. Now by what they have posted you have to park to the out side of the block and walk in leaving your property setting alone beside of the highway or public roads while your a mile in on foot. Not having your vehicle ready available for what ever situation that might arise. This makes it hard on someone to enjoy the sport of coon hunting, along with a older person or a child. The wardens in this area look for any reason to write you up,gray areas are their favorite.I have emailed the NC Wildlife.ORG to give my opinion on this matter. If you have a interest in the accessibility of streams, creeks, brancheads, where as to drop your hounds on Sandhills Game Lands which cover Scotland,Hoke,Richmond,Moore Counties please email them for your opinion on this matter or call them at the number on their home page.It just seems to me they have there own agendas and interest going for themselves and not for us or the wildlife.
I have dove hunted game lands here an hour from my house for years, this was the first year I ever remember the gates being closed to vehicle traffic. Spoke to a Waden that day and he stated that it has always been policy for no motorized access to Game lands (except to Handicap hunters and then by permit only)...complaints have caused the gates to be shut and the policy to be enforced. Not sure if he was blowing smoke or knew what he was talking about but it was a looooong hike to those dove fields, one thing I liked was that there were not nearly as many hunters, most were too lazy to walk it. Saw several trucks drive up, do a 3 point turn and leave.

notice out on the feild trial area next to Hoffman NC,they have none of these signs up on any of the cut through roads, just the gamelands part around the feildtrials.where these signs are where my truck going to be parked right in the middle of the road. Not going to make it easy for them to drive in where I'm at,they gona walk to or wait.
Harvy
Thats bad news we can't drive on them I think they are forgetting with out us buying a game land license it will be hard for them to keep the land. And then they let them go all over them with horse's and bugges, and they don't even have a game land license.I think we are getting shafted bad.I will e-mail them this weekend. It is bad to pay to hunt on the land then have them to put so many restictions on it that you can't hunt it.

Yea
Scotty,I'm not gona be saticfied til some compromise is made,if I write them til I'm gone, and I don't mean til I'm disabled. There needs to be at least one road in on every block.Might get you and Marshall and go to one of their commitee meetings and give our input.Usally in Norwood NC alot. Got Sherry calling her people in Anson Co,about it also.
Intellectualist, thanks for the warning AND I will ck it out before I act but if the road is closed to traffic then they dont need to drive in to ck me is HOW I feel about it.I will deal more about this in a very legal manner.

Don't be confused, not all game lands are owned by "us". Some Game Lands are owned by individuals or companies (mostly Paper Companies here in ENC), those lands can be put in the program or taken out of the program depending on the wishes of the owners.
There are Game Lands that are State or Federal lands, I do not know who owns the Sandhill's Game Lands...but I did see a couple of references in the posts above about it being "our" lands and that is the case for some but not all Game Lands.

Thanks Chris
Most are here anyway land sold or given to them, some tracts are private because a tax purpose.BUT IF YOU PURCHASE A PERMIT TO HUNT THEM YOU SHOULD HAVE EXCESS ON THEM WITH A VEHICAL, THE WARRDEN NOT GONA WALK IN A MILE OR LESS TO CK YA,HE IS GONA RIDE IN IN HIS OR HERS YUKON.Seems around alot of the areas horse back is becoming more and more popular, for those people who like that but the hunter is losing out more and more. Here the military use the lands for manuvers,I've heard they want to purchase all of it.
coon's age
we hunted the sandhills some last season and we used horses to hunt off of, you may wanna consider to get you a horse
we are talking about going up there when season comes back in if we do we will be horse coon hunting again

i don't know if it's the same now or not but i was told 16 years ago or more that the only two gamelands the state of n.c. actually owned were holly shelter swamp in pender county and thurmond chatham on the wilkes/allegheny border. i was told by a wildlife biologist that all others were owned by private entities. when i hunted holly shelter the first year there was a biologist that lived in a small house on site. he told me of a good place in the game lands to scope in my rifle. the next year i went there and fired into the same pile of sand, on leaving i was stopped by a game warden and checked for a license and was told that what i had done was illegal but he'd let it slide (he was, by the way, very unfriendly and unprofessional. actually he was down right hateful). i haven't hunted thurmond chatham or holly shelter since '93 so i don't know what may have changed.
re
sandy mush game land here in WNC doesnt allow horses and gates are always closed BUT, there are plent of places to park on the side of the rd and turn loose on the creek and what not. there is a lot of land out here

You might be surprised to find out the powers that are driving some of these rules changes. I see it growing more and more every year, hunters against hunters. By this I mean guys with money living in big cities driving out to the country with visions of buck masters fresh in their minds bathing in camo soap wearing sent lock clothes trying to practice buck management on a few acres of land that they will pay and can pay thousands of dollars for. Don't think for one minute that you and your hounds are not these guys most hated enemy because we are, they will fight against us harder than any animal rights activist out there. This really cuts me to the bone, one hunter fighting against another when their too blind to see the tactic of divide and conquer. I'll say this much if they fight against me and cause me to loose the right to hunt with my hounds I may as well join the ranks of the rest of the anti hunters and fight against them.
I know you might ask what has this to do with game lands being locked up but I know that there are lawyers and other guys with money that have connections in the right places that can pull strings and get things done. I'm sorry if I sound paranoid its just that I find myself dealing with this more and more as the years go by. This very subject has really strained one of my best and longest friendships, this guy and myself have been friends for over thirty years and he is what we call a still hunter and trophy hunter and he don't like the idea of a hound even crossing his hunting lands, we finally agreed to disagree. I agree that it sucks that we have game lands and someone with the power can lock us out thinking that the only people that hunt is someone with a $1500 rifle with a $1200 scope mounted on it slung across his shoulder wearing about $500 worth of camo clothes and boots hiking a mile into a hunting spot. Don't get me wrong I have deer hunted and still enjoy the chance to take a deer now and then but theres no way I could hike a mile into a hunting spot shoot a deer and then drag it back out to the truck, they probably would have to air lift me out due to a heart attack.
I agree with you Allan! In NC as well as VA we are IN a battle with the powers to be about hunting with hounds! The animal rights nutcases are trying everything in their power to make it so you dont have access to game lands! Heck in VA unless you live in the mountains we have very little public land to hunt on! Just be sure if your hunting with or without hounds that you do to the letter what the law states, if not you make us all look bad!

the feds are the same way out here on public land every yearanother road is closed to either TO STOP EROSIAN OR BETTER HABITAT just big gov't taken away your right to enjoy PUBLIC LAND
holly shelter swamp should be called Holly Hell Swamp. That place is rough as hair on a hogs back.
Here in SC it has been that way for years. You either walk or dont hunt. We even have several areas that once deer season closes they shut the gates on 100,000 acre tracts of land even though small game season is still open.

what one can do on public game lands is very limited. i hunt the croatan national forest. you can't drive beyond a gate, even if it's open. you can use atv(s) on the maintained dirt roads. you can't ride horses on the dirt roads. some groups want to limit mountain bikes use of the trails. the purest are afraid some ugly american will leave a foot print or a tire track where no one is going to see it anyway. i appreciate some restrictions, so many low lifes go to the forest to dump everything from household garbage to construction rubble and appliances. i've seen where atv users so often leave a bunch of trash when they sneak into the woods. they camp, chop on the big hard woods as if they were doing it for exercise and leave all their crap. during deer season the deer hunters park on the side of the dirt roads. they leave all their trash. didn't they learn to clean up behind themselves? i've been with people and have seen them just throw their trash onto the ground. where did they learn to do this kind of thing?

I try
to follow the rules and regulations, always have, but like Allen said hiken in is only hurting not only our sport but also older and younger who we need in our sport. The land, leased or buoght is made public so have access to the inner most spot and then put up the signs and cut down on the disstance for our seniors and youth.YA KNOW AS WELL AS i DO THAT IF A KID a teenager has to walk very far much less a 4 yearold they grow tired of it quickly.Ahunter deerhunting, coonhunting ,squrilhunting, duckhunting, dovehunting, they need access to their truck at times if not emergencies.HERE I have seen warrdens put up signs so they could hunt those areas and then take them down after the season.AND I only ask if you have a problem with it to call and email your thoughts to the nc wildlife.org home page, their number on the home page.Sherry and myself will be using a diabillity ride thru card because of her back, but I know how this withen its self will cause many to just stop using the public lands and then its VICTORY for them.I'm calling everybody that I can and then doing it again til I'm saticfied AND I'm not easly givenupon. Thanks for posting your thoughts, and commits,at least YOU SEE it too.
re
what about the people that would abuse the "drive in" rules. i understand where everyone is coming from but at the same time, that is a conservation area. So they dont want people tearing up everything trying to park right next to their dogs. Or teenagers going and doing donuts all of the field and scaring everything up.

Teenagers
IT don't matter if they have signs up or not, they will do it any ways, that is just part of being a teenager. Most coon hunters I know try to take care of the roads and land because we need it to hunt on.The hores mess up the roads a lot more than the trucks do,they make them rough and bumpy to travel on.
There has been a lot of good points posted on here so far.

game land
The people that destory the land needs to be caught weres the game warden then.they will sat at your truck all night waiting on you, they need to really be after the ones causing the trouble then maybe we all could have roads to drive on.
