Bad News for Mayberry Blue Andy
Took Andy to the vet today because he hasn't been acting right, or eating like he should. He has been drinking more water than usual too.
Vet ran some test and told me his kidneys were shutting down. She said nothing they could do. It was like someone put a knife in my stomach. I like Andy better than any hound I've ever raised. He looked good to my eye, and looked just as good, if not better, in the woods.
It comes with the turf, but it doesn't make it any easier.

Hang in there....it's not over yet. I've heard of several hounds that were given the death sentence by vets due to kidney and liver problems only to come back and make a full recovery. Let him rest, give him some raw meat to eat, a little vitamin C and see what happens. Change his food, and treat him for Leptospira (a protozoa that often shows kidney problems). Hang in there, I hope he makes a full recovery!

Craig, We are still praying for you and Andy...and will continue to do so....
Sincerely, Heather and Bob
Sorry Rev!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to everyone. I can't believe how many people have pm'd me, or called, or posted their concern.. people that I don't even know. It's overwhelming in a good way. Still a lot of good, caring people in this world, and coonhunters are a "special breed."
I owned Smokey River Spud
Jean's Blue Tramp
Chief's Blue Jake......not bragging ...but they were decent dogs...
I have never owned a dog that I have gotten attached to like Andy. He is just special, and has been since the day he was born.
I have lost hounds before, as well as everyone has, but this has really knocked the breath out of me.

RE: Andy
Sorry to hear about Andy. We almost lost Dee last week from Leptospirosis. Symptoms started with lethargy, no appetite and no drinking. Happened on the holiday so she was that way for 3 days before we could go to the vet. It had started shutting down her kidneys and her blood work showed it moving to her liver, and pancreas. She's was at the animal hospital on IV antibiotics & fluid for 6 days and now seems to be on her way to recovery. She's home, eating special food and going crazy to go hunting.
Has your vet said what is causing the kidney problems?? Wondering if it's anything heriditary?? What did he say to do for him?
We'll be praying for you and for him.
God Bless,
Wayne & Julie

Craig I'm so sorry
Andy sounded like the one with something special about him.
I know how you feel when you have to make that kind of decision on a dog that looks you in the eye and says help me daddy. I stopped hunting for 8 years when it happen to me.
Then last year my Roler dog gets hit and killed at 2 years old it just takes a piece of your heart and soul. Thing will get better and at least you did get some pups off him to keep him alive in your bloodline. Take care maybe see you at the Fall Round up if you go.
sorry to hear that Craig. My fathers lost a couple to kidney failure. Some tough to see the good ones go.

Andy
Hey Craig not sure what to really say here, talking to you on the phone the other day was the first I had heard of Andy then a buddy said he seen you posted something about it on here. This was a real shocker and has been hard to think about it's a sickening feeling you get when you hear something like that happening to a hound like him. I know this must be hard for you, all I can say is I am deeply sorry and I hope the best for Andy and you both. Prayer and hope will go a long way with a little TLC, who knows we may be talking about Andy a year from now. This all seems very surreal for me not even a month ago Craig gave me an opportunity of a lifetime to hunt Andy where I instantly new he was something special. Andy's the type that will make you like him and you will quickly and easly become attached to. I just want to thank Preacher Craig for giving me that opportunity, Andy means alot to me more than you'll probally ever know. Just a short while back Andy and I first came in contact as I had a female that I breed Andy to. A even shorter time there after I got Andy from Craig where I hunted him for about a month or so. I must say hunting with Andy is the most pleasure I've had hunting a dog since I've started in this sport. Andy's one of those rare hounds that most will never have the pleasure of hunting with much less own. Many will read this and think I'm just another person talking up a dog on a UKC site but its truely a case of seeing is beliveing, belive me given the chance he will prove his worth and then some. It's surely isn’t Andy's time to go, he’s achieved so much at his young age and has not yet reached his full potential. Andy’s got a lot left to give I only hope he gets a second chance if you have the chance to hunt with him take it, nothing more need be said he'll do the rest.

I want to thank everyone for the kind, and encouraging words.
Jordan, thanks for everything . See you figured out how to post those pictures. Looks good to me.
I plan on taking him to another vet tomorrow to get a second opinion. He hasn't really eaten anything today. Been real sluggish.
I am willing to do whatever it takes for him to get well.
The posts have encouraged me to keep trying to get him well.
Maby the Good Lord will see fit to smile on Andy and me. I know there are so many people who are really suffering, and hurting with loved ones and family members hanging in the balance of life and death. It makes me feel kinda selfish to pray for a dog, but I also know if it's important to me........It's important to my Heavenly Father.
No matter how it turns out....God is Good All the Time!!!!!
