definition of a good "comp" dog

its no secret i'm new to coon hunting let alone comp hunting but i would like to know everyones oppinion on what a GOOD competition hunt style dog is?

A comp dog around here has to stand on the tree till it's handled. I told the judge before casting that my dog would come smell me a little off the tree and get right back on it. Sure enough dogs ABC were treed, Mine was A, Judge went in first and dogs counted as treed, she met me 20 feet off the tree, wheeled around and got back on the tree within 3 seconds from the time she left the tree. With that, the judge said "That dog is minused for going back on trail." WHAT!? I asked. "Yes," he said, "she dropped her head before she got on the tree". Okie dokie den I says to myself, you ever seen a dog load in the dogbox without dropping its head? You ever seen a horse jump a hedge without dropping it's head? But since you're the Guide and the Hunting Judge, I'm sure you are right. (Thanks for the compliment I says to myself under my breath, you just said that within one half second my dog can figure out a track from a backtract, locate and tree.)

Point being, If you want to learn how to Ballett, take up competion hunting! If you want to Boogie Woogie and have a good time too, call me for a pleasure hunt.

Between you and me, GR.NITE CH So and So is a fair to middling dog. But I know how he got it. Of course, that dog has changed hands several times. I have been offered free stud service for a pup off my bitch one time. No Thanks!! Time starts when the sun go down: time ends whenever the sun gits to shining.

I would say a dog that is smart enough to back when needed but, knows when not too and has to be a 1st strike dog for the most part, a little babble never hurts. That is what will win consistant. What I hunt now is nothing like I described but, I do win sometimes with dead independent tight mouthed hounds that are 98% accurate.

alright so i'm looking for a babbling pack dog that can do it alone on occasion. but is accurate? is that what is winning the hunts? ha maybe i dont want to competition hunt i'll never win!

I wouldn't tolerate a babbling pack dog. The kind of dog I call a pack dog is one that I can leave in the box and let your dog strike. And then if your dog gets to snortin and fartin and you decide that he could use some help, then I'll take my dog out the box and hold him by the collar till your dog makes another boo. Then if I'm sure my dog heard your dog I'll turn him loose to go "pack". Within a minute he'll be there and open, then take that track and say to the other dog "if you want to go you better stick your finger in my belt loop cause we're goin for a ride. That's what a pack dog is. Don't let any joker fool you. It aint one you turn out and the dog says to hisself, that dog's working a cold track. "Hell, I probably can't even smell it. I think I better go the other way and find a hot one."

I hope you realize from this that when that same "packdog" gets cut loose first and is scaulding a track in our direction, you'll be begging, "May I please pack my dog in."

I got me a double merle Leopard born deaf. Should make my first "independant" dog. Beats havin to deafen one that's already born stupid, tree crazy, hot nosed, and insecure! And slow.

give me a dog that strikes for 25 and and bushwacks a coon and I'll win more than I lose with the leaves off. But everyone has there preference

A good dog should be able to tree a coon on any given night. A good independant balanced hound with a good nose that can trees coons in good conditions and bad conditions is what you need to look for. Stay away from anything mean, and since your new to the sport I would stay away from radical tree dogs, tree jackers and all that. Get something with a good mouth that you can call and hear from a good distance. Before you buy a dog go to some clubs near you and spectate 10 or so casts and you will find out what you need to win. If your area is like it is around here if you find an independent hound that can tree 2 or 3 coons in two hours you can compete and win with the best of em. I spent the first several years of my coonhunting career hunting junk so I appreciate a good honest coon dog.


Ps. the most important thing is to find a hound that you enjoy turning loose night after night. coonhunting can be a nightmare if your hunting something you don't like.

this is what i have

some people may dissagree with me but i hunt her so i'll tell the story. she is young mind you. independent sometimes to independent to tree with another dog with the meat. will sometimes finish tracks others start and tree first. first strike dog no babble never have i seen her babble we hunt thin coon thinner than most i think. really accurate i think she's pulled slick twice and only one was legit the other there were lots of leaves. hard to call on the tree takes a minute for me to tell the difference in her trail chop to slightly more intense tree chop. been hunted in two hunts. both before she was really ready i just wanted to go for fun. got spanked in both i take almost full blame one night and i give most to her on the other. but either way got beat fair. so what do you all think i have? anything worth hunting?

BJW if she suites you it dont mater what anybody else thinks, go hunting and enjoy her.

I had a "marsh tacky" horse. I got a Peruvian Passo. Horses are cheaper than coondogs right now. My son" I won't say" bought:", but" Took On" another dozen of those "hairy tailed rats" within the last month. Most were given to him. (If you're a horse/dog) trader, Borrow up some that stimulis money and don't miss your chance in the sun.

I'm de daddy and I rode them all. Hands down, the best Pleasure Horse is the Peruvian. I rode them all, the regler Thoughbreds, Walkin horses, and the Paint versions thereof. I'm gettin old, in his opinion, but the quarterhorse, try as it may cannot jump out fom under me , not even when I'm in the woods, fixin to cross a creek, or stick a hog and it shows it's colors to balk, buck, rear, or lay down in water. "What a piece of carp". When i got off I was sore causa dem. When I got off my Peruvian, was looking forward to doing it again.

I bin a Walker man for 41 years. Competiton hunted 20 times. Pleasure hunted 38,800 times. Been on a horse whats done bin rode hard and put up wet (much prefer not to pick up on somebody elses hag whats bin put up wet).. Been the goose laying the golden egg that cuts fool with with a " good ole girl". (One of my current girlfriend bees from Minnesota, nuddun from Pennsylvania, I Ain't prejudice.) Fixin to go Leopard for pleasure.
