You need to recalibrate the compass. Press the menu button then select Calibrate Compass and follow the instruction.

wrong direction
We're using the garmin for bear hunting, I have seen what you are saying a lot. I found it's best to also carry a good old fashion compass and compare North with the compass. The compass is always right. some times the garmin is 180 deg. wrong.
Also starting to see a lot of interference with "other" dogs out side of our group. With only "50 I.D." numbers this is only going to get worse.
Another problem we're seeing is we cannot get all 50 I.D. to work.
It's been a costly change and I'm not ready to sell off my wildlife collars yet.

been there done that
How many times a day do you adjust? Now I just compare. the tracks recorded are always right, so the internal reference is right.
Just the external gets goofy and then is back in a few. it also works best when moving.

Yes, all GPS work best when moving (I am not sure but I think the Astro MUST be moving for the compass to be correct, been a while since I read the manuel though). If you are not moving it is having to average the sattelites etc and it is missing one piece of info, you moving.
While most times you don't have to recalibrate it unless you change batteries etc, it is technically possible to have to recalibrate it every time you turn it off and back on.
Mine doesn't get off that much, about the only time I have to recalibrate it is when I change batteries, but technically I think you are supposed to calibrate the compass every time you turn it on (I do leave mine on all the time with the backlight off).
