Coon Paralysis

Last weekend I was out listening to some old timers talk and one of them brought up coon paralysis and said a buddy of his has a dog that got it and he never fully recovered from it and eventually had to be put down, and I was wondering if this is the case with all dogs that get this or is there a way to treat it,also can it be prevented?

coon paralysis

I had a young walker years ago, that I was told by the vet, had the paralysis...he had treed and fought the coon and killed it. The coon had bitten him several times on the head. I don't remember how long after the dog started to stagger some and the vet told me he would loose his balance and his back legs would become useless and would move to his front with the same results. Within a short time the dog would regain his strength with the symptoms reversing beginning at the front and recovering to the back legs. He did recover and as best I can remember he was completely healed from the paralysis...I have been hunting for about 50 years and that was the only time I have ever heard of it.

Keep em in the woods...
