Is independance bred into a dog or is it taught and encouraged through training and hunting?

Not to all the pups in the litter but to some ...
Also if you hunt a dog by himself for long enough , he will learn he dosen't need another dog....
I have seen first hand some of my Coma and Swamp bred dogs just come by it naturally.............

I don`t want to hijack your thread but I have a question about independence too. I always thought an independent dog was one that took a track and got treed and wouldn`t pull to another dog for nothing. Now I`m learning that most mean a dog that won`t tree with other dogs, must get off by it`s self. What happens with a dog like that if it gets struck and another dog strikes behind it but pushes the track faster? Does it quit it`s track and go look for another rather than take second tree?

that's a good question. I'm not sure.

Everyone is going to have their own opinions. I have one I consider independent almost to, if not to a fault. He will run a track with others maybe 10% of the time and the same with treeing. I've seen him work a track with two other dogs, they treed about 75 yards in with the meat, he worked a track right by them knocking the wood back and never looked over at the tree. He seems to duck and dodge other dogs. I know he has never been hunted with anything rough and was only hunted maybe twice before I got him as a 2 year old. He has potential but, really isn't for pleasure hunting which is mainly what I do. When you cut him it is a surprise if he opens anywhere near another dog. LOL!

Independence is all about prefrence. Where i live there are several coon in one patch of woods therefore a dog should be able to get treed split if it has been beat on tree without walking a mile. Theres nothing more entertaining then to walk to 4 split treed dogs and seeing 4 coon. In my eyes independence is a dog that wolnt tree with a dog thats already treed. The dog realizes that track has been finished and moves on to finish another track. The good thing about this type of dog is they never get in trouble unless they got themselves into it.

Its mostly bred into one but can be trained into one to some degree.....
