Wet phlegmy cough
Ok, so now the puppies are 8 wks. old and all of them have what I would discribe as a wet phlemy sounding cough. They are still active and eating. I removed ALL the cedar chips and they are bedded down with newspaper. This just started on Monday or so. They have been all de-wormed, had their first shot and to all indications, it points to kennel cough or upper respiratory infection.
How the heck do pups get kennel cough? They were never any other place then here and no new dogs have been around them.
The runt died on Saturday from this, only his head was all stopped up and he couldn't breathe. He quit eating and just faded away. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I have a call into my vet for it. Want to take one of the pups to him and have him do a stool exam, maybe parasites, I don't know.
Any ideas?

They are very active and playing like nothing is wrong. Running and rolling and doing puppy stuff. They just have this wet sounding cough, not the deep whooping cough sound, just like a throat clearing cough. I just fed them and they ate it all up and are out there rolling around and playing and barking at each other.

So now I read that it can be because the weather has been wet, rainy and cool. Then we have 90's with high humidity and that can make it worse. They really don't give much in the way of treatment except to let it run it's course like a common cold and watch for secondary infections. Then you should start antibiotics.
This whole summer has been very wet and rainy and relatively cool up until this past Sunday. Then the heat came and so did their cough.
Should I worry?

We just went through this with a redbone litter that we raised. They have never been away from my home yet when taken to the vet I was told they had pneumonia. We gave them 5 days of Azithromycin and they were fine (and still are - we kept them all). Vet said I could also use Doxycycline but it was 2x a day and would take 10 days. The Azithromycin was 1x per day and only 5 days. Ours escalted pretty fast - like coughing and fine one day and almost dead the next so don't watch it too long.
Good luck! Priscilla

Did they say what caused it? The fine one day and cough and stuff next day and dead by the 3rd day was the runt. These guys have had it since Monday. Have been giving them Albon since Monday. They are no worse, but no better either.

Nope and the pups were born here and had never been away from here. I also have never had a dog here with it not even years ago. It was baffled by the whole thing but by the 2nd dose of meds they were back eating, running around and acting normal. One of them tried to relapse and got a 2nd round about a week later. They are great now. Swimming all over the pond and thinking the own the place.

Well thanks to my car letting me set last evening in the middle of the road, I couldn't go to the vet today. But I did speak with him and relayed everything to him. He said he is seeing a lot of puppies with upper and lower respiratory infections this year due to the weather. He told me to start them on Penicillin G procaine at 1/2 cc IM for 3 days. The bottle says 5 days, so I'm not sure which one to use. The pups are all active today and had eaten all their food since last evening. I HOPE AND PRAY that this works. If not, I'm not sure what to do for them after the Penicillin treatment.

4 of the pups act like nothing is wrong, they act normal, except for the cough. The 5th one is kind of quiet and laying back, she did get up to greet me this morning when I went out to give them their shots, but after that, she went and laid down again. Keeping fingers crossed. I am giving them 1/2 cc of Penicillin G procaine IM.
