Coonhound Paralysis???

A friend of mines dog got coonhound paralysis. She was down for about 15 days and is now up and seems fine for about the last 15 days.

When can he start hunting her again?

What are the effects of the disease?

torro i had a beagle get this, sorry to say she never did pull out 100% would be staggering around in hind quarters when standing up on kennel and could not run well kept her around for about 6 months hoping she would get better ,never did she suffered harshly, hope his dog pulls out of it

I've never seen a case of it, but have heard that it affects every dog differently so I don't know if anyone can really give advice about it without seeing your hound or not.

Well she has come out of it. She up walking eating acting normal. He is just wondering when is a good time to start hunting her again.

Coonhound Paralysis

We had this happen to a Black & Tan back in the 70's. Knocked him down for two-three weeks. He did recover, and was hunted for several more years (until he was 13-14 years old).

A friend had a female that had an extremely bad case of this (I believe a couple of months). I don't believe she ever came back close to where she was before this.

I would slowly try to build the dog back up, and let the dog tell you when it's time to start back hunting.

never had a dog with it but have heard and know of ones that once they have gotten it, they will in all likelyhood get it again when they come in contact with the coon saliva.

My info of the cause is that a bacteria from a coon bite is transferred to the dog during a fight. It is considered an"acute nuerological disorder." No miracle cure. just time.

Do a keyword search online and read for yourself. There are some good info online. Seems each case is unique from mild effects to fatal results.

My dog was down for 6 weeks. After he was able to stand, he was hunting in about 6 weeks. Each case is different though.

Only thing I ca say regarding lasting affects is the dog has to warm up on the first turnout. Seems like he is a little stove up.
Then he gets stronger the more you hunt him.

not to my knowlegde. Having a hound in good physical condition before the onset would probably be the best defense.

I haven't read on the subject in two years.

i had a dog had it once, lasted a week maybe.
he fully recovered, got bit hundreds of times after with
no problems.

this was years ago but i remember it was at x-mas time
because i had to bring him in the house.

this was diagnosed as coonhound paralysis by my vet, but
this either takes a while to manifest in a dog to the lame stage
or its caused by things other than coon saliva....or the dog
was mis-diagnosed. i say this because by x-mas time we have
snow for weeks and i am done coonhunting.

never did figure that one out.strange disease.

Had to take my sons dog to the vet last night because she got bit by a Copperhead on both of her front legs.Dr.Stephen said have you ever heard of or seen Coonhound Paralysis? Well, here is a case of it you can see first hand.A Plott hound was in the cage just breahting and blinking her eyes,thats it.It is caused by the saliva of a coon.What he said was the Immune system gets all excited and attacks the nervous system and gives the hound paralysis.Some hounds dont make it some do.Doc said no shot was know of that would cure it .Could take a long time in some hounds.Some casesnot so long.All I know it is a very sad thing to see.Hope your friends hound get over it and is fine.Thanks for your time,Sam Kelly.

my friends dog got it and was laid up for several weeks in living room, him feeding with a spoon. after he got over hunted him awhile and shot coon out to him , and he got it again. so now he want let him get ahold of a coon untill it is dead.

Is it more common in some areas compared to others?

Coonhound Paralysis

We had a 13 month old puppy/dog get it. He got bit by a coon in the same week he had his rabies shot. Hank was a young dog that was doing a super fine job on his own. He was a once in a lifetime dog.
The vet didn't believe it was coonhound paraylsis, as he had never seen it. His receptionest was the one who figured it out.

We brought Hank home and sat with hime on the living room floor and watched as the disease attacked his body. Tt went up his back legs, spine and across his shoulders. He moaned and tried to bark as we watched coonhunting videos with him. He died and we buried him across the kennels in a flower bed. It was a very sad day. We still miss him.
