Ear Infection

Ear Infection what do you use and how much

Posted by SFWALKER on 08-10-2009 03:37 PM:

2 parts white vinegar. 2 parts hydrogen peroxide and 1 part water. The vinegar changes the pH in the ear which makes it harder for the bacteria to grow. This has worked great for me.

It is nice to do home remedies, but ear infections are some thing that I take to the vet. Sure, some times the home remedies will work, but let one of your all time favorite hounds get chronic ear problems just once ... I trust you will feel differently about ear infections. I know I do.

Funny thing is one of our dogs just went through one. We used ottomax, and I used it until it was gone.

This dog already has ear infection I would be afraid to use alcohol on her

VET...

... for ear infection BEST to take the dog to vet for antibiotics.. you can PREVENT them with home remedies most of the time... We are going thru a third ear infection treatment right now on one dawg...darn those LONG droopy ears...

BTW I use alcohol in the "purple solution" to clean ears and have NEVER had a dog react to the sting... I have used it in mouth wounds as well... The recipe for that solution is posted on here(many times over by now)...AND... Had I not gotten LAZY... the BnT wouldn't have the ear infection he has now.... Live and Learn...

Good lucky with your dawg! Heather

That there is the $100.00 question without making a slide and checking under a microscope you don't know.

You NEED a vet!
The vet will need to do an ear culture to discover the type of ear infection. There are different varieties and the longer it takes to treat, the longer your dog is in pain.

I had a redbone with an ear infection that was chronic. The vet kept treating it and treating it... he assumed it was yeast. I even used homemade remedies (women's OTC yeast cream medication works for yeast infections in the ear) and hundreds of dollars. I got angry and demanded the drastic surgery where they remove part of the ear canal and by doing so they remove the infection and open up the ear canal so it can breathe and dry better, which cause the ear infections. So, instant cure and prevention both, right? WRONG! It was costly and it STILL didn't cure this girl!!

I FIRED my vet for his inability to help my dog. New vet cultured her ear, gave me the appropriate medication and she was pain free within 2 days and completely healed within the week. I battled that dang infection of hers for a YEAR! She was on pain medication the entire time. I was about to put her to sleep because of it and was desperate to help her. All it took was a quick ear culture. Total cost for the true cure? $50!

Please.. take your dog to the vet!

I took mine to the vet and had the cultures ran and a $130 later still no improvement. Most vets aroung here are just financial rapists! I have taken my dogs to the vet three times since I have owned hounds and now I am $700 in the hole and I am no better off had I not went. Most vets will not give you the service you are paying for if they are treating dogs that they know are used for hunting!
I despise vets and regular doctors as well. I look at it like this, if you take your car to a transmission shop because the transmission is out, then I guess you darn well should have a perfecly working transmission when you leave there, right? Well, vets and doctors are not that way. They will drain you dry and hope you keep coming back for more financial punishment but I think if they do not do anything for you, you owe them nothing!!!

Sounds like you need to fire your vet and find a new one. Not all are created equal - for better or for worse. My vet loves coonhounds and the romanticism of hunting with them. He is two hours away. Why do I travel that far? Because I've FIRED all the vets closer to us! Many were fired during my days of raising/showing dairy goats. If I got so much as a 'it's just a goat', they got a 'your fired'. As my Dad taught me when he fired a vet for refusing to care for a deacon calf because "it's worthless, just let it die and get a new one instead of paying me big money".... vets work for YOU. That's the key. Same with doctors. They work for you. If they aren't doing their job, fire them. You need to find one that you can trust even if you need to drive out of town to do so. It's sometimes difficult to find the right one. Same goes with any quality employee, right? But when you get one who's as priceless as I have, you don't refer to him as your employee... you refer to him/her as your partner.

I wish it was as easy as firing a vet and finding another! Sounds like you went through way more vets than I have dealt with so you know I am telling the truth.
I guess I have been lucky, not needed vet services "much" for the number of years I have owned dogs.Even then the services were marginal at best.
Not sure about your employee anology or how it applies here, but there is a much larger "pool" to pick from for employees, and I mean good ones too, than there are vets that are decent! Same applies to doctors. Most around here are not taking new patients so that limits your choices. The ones who are taking new patients makes you wonder why they have room for new patients. Probably because they suck so bad many people have already fired them!
How much money do you think a person should waste in this pursuit of vet shopping pray tell???

None. Do your research and know what's going on when you walk in the door. Know what you want them to do. There are too many resources out there now to be ignorant and dependent on a vet or a doctor. Know how far you will go and draw the line.

I have fired a few vets in my time, too. Mostly for attitude and once for lying to me about what he did to my dog. The rest of them usually fall in with what I want when they figure out that I know what I'm talking about and I know what can and can't be done. They may give me flack about it and they may disapprove but like Janet said, they work for me, not the other way around.

I had one once who was really pushing the lepto vaccine. I refuse to allow my dogs to have that one. He kept giving me these dire warnings and even tried to say that my dog was going to die horribly if I didn't let him vaccinate her for it. I shut him up by asking how many serovars his covered - 4 out of nearly 30. And the ones in the vaccine are not even the most commonly found ones in my area. Add that to the high rate of allergic reaction to that particular vaccine and I will not give it. He shut up and gave only the vaccines I asked for but I never went back to him. That kind of alarmist attitude to get me to do what he wanted was enough for me to know he wasn't the vet for me.

For your information, I had done my research and knew my dog had an ear infection!I also know that what was prescribed is typically indicated for a canine ear infection. How much more informed does a person have to be??? Sounds like if you have fired a few vets then obviously you went in ignorant and did not utilize all these resources that were available to you.
If you had done your research then why did you have to fire a few vets?
On to the doctor thing which you mention, you can say what you want, but not many doctors (if they have any sense) are going to let you just go in and boss them around. They may order a test and you definitely have the right to refuse it but you make it sound as though you are armed with more knowledge than they have and you can get anything you want done or prescribed, and that is just not true! If you are so astute in these matters why are you not a practicing physician or veterinarian?
Vets and doctors go through extensive amounts of schooling and training which neither you, nor I have, to earn the degrees they have and it should not have to be a wild guess and get lucky to get one to do what they are trained to do.
My complaint is, if you go to a vet or a doctor and they do not cure the problem, why do you owe them anything! It has little to do with being "armed" with knowledge in most cases. If there is a chance the recommended course of treatment will not work, they should tell you that upfront instead of just stringing you along and milking you dry, That is the point I am trying to make!
Once again, back to the auto mechanic analogy I made. If you bring your car to me because the transmission needs rebuilt and I supposedly fix it for $1000, and you get it out on the road and it will not shift in third gear, what are you going to do? You are going to bring it right back and demand either a refund or for me to make it right and that is what you should do. Vets and doctors who are willing to charge rediculous fees for their services should be treated no different!

vet!

Take the dog to the vet. I've been through the ear problem twice two different dogs, both were treated with all the home remedies that have ever been mentioned on this message board and nothing worked. These ear things are just to delicate to fix at home without the help of a trained professional. There are so many different things that can affect the ears on dogs, They can be allergic to corn or beef in dog food that can drive the ears crazy, there are yeast infections and many other types of infections. I have even heard of dogs having tiny hairs growing in the ears that can mimic ear infections. Once again go to the vet.

Sadly enough, this poster's words are very true. I tried the home remedies as well with no luck.
If you do go to the vet, do not expect to get out with under $150 invested ,and quite possibly more, with perhaps little to no results. And this is for just the first appointment!
I just hope you find one that is honest and will not try to string you along as far financially as they can. I have seen it happen and have heard many more complaints than I have good things!
