people tell me
people tell me that an independent dog can not win at the big hunts . will you all tell me what you think . just wondering if im wasting my time hunting autumn oaks .
Sad but true. Depends what you consider independent, as long as they will get a piece of the others tracks and their own you will be alright but a real independent dog that wont honor has a tough row to hoe.
DONT LET THEM TELL YOU THAT JUNK IF YOU GOT ONE AND IT IS RIGHT AND ITS WILL GET TREED BY ITSELF EVERY TIME THATS THE ONES THAT ARE HARD TO BEAT ID RATHER HAVE ONE THAT WAY ANY DAY THAN A SORRY ME TO DOG GET TREED AND HAVE THERE COON AND WATCH IT LIGHT UP A SCORE CARD

i agree with mike,
only thing that can kill you is if you are not getting first or second strikes seems like a lot of loners arent the best strike dogs

I love it when guys say in order to win alot you better have a dog that will get a piece of everyone elses tree.. okay just evaluate that statement for a minute
I WILL NOT OWN A DOG THAT DOESNT TREE BY THEIRSELF EVERYTIME. IF MINE DOESNT TREE FIRST AND YOURS DOES THEN THATS YOURE COON AND MY DOG BETTER NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT. THE PAST 3 DOGS IVE OWNED YOU COULD WALK THEM RIGHT BESIDE A TREED DOG AND THEY WOULDNT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY WERE TREED. There is nothing more aggervating than having a dog that will cover another dog. If i owned dogs that would i would quit coon hunting and run beagles
You look at what breed is most sucsessful and wonder why... well its because of independence

Nobudy dislikes a me tooo dog more than me, I wont own one but the fact is if you get a cast with two good independant coondogs and one good me too dog he can outscore you. It will remain this way until U.K.C. adopts a tree countdown rule.
Youre EXACTLY right!!!!!! Keep the pathetic mee too dogs out of the picture
And guys the definition of a mee too dog is this... If a dog is treed for more then 45 seconds and youre dog trees with it then its a mee too dog. Somple as that ! Man i cant stand them

Yep i agree 10000 % the scores are absurd and unrealistic BUT guys will swear up and down how easy it is to score 2000 plus points and i cant help but laugh
People just go to have fun.

im not trying to hijack the thread but i've got a question.
i've never comp hunted before but im wanting to give it a shot. yall think i'd be wasting my time?
let me describe the dog im planning on using. she's typically a 1st or 2nd strike and 1st or 2nd tree dog. she's pretty independent but she will cover another dog if she's not on a seperate track. if she's treeing and another dog split trees, she'll hold her tree. i HAVE seen her go to the other tree but it was close(maybe 20 yds). when she trees, it doesnt matter what the others are doing, she's on the tree barking every breath. wont pick a fight ever but im not sure what she'd do if another dog got after her. so, i dont consider her a me too dog but she's not independent to the point of flat out ignoring every other dog in the woods. if she never makes it as a comp dog, im ok with keeping her as a pleasure dog b/c she's plenty fun to hunt and aint that what its all about?
moss
Sounds like she would be a good one but you never really know what a dog is going to do in a hunt until its cast with 3 other dogs.

thanks guys. just curious.
I don't know who told you that but they were wrong.
I am looking for a dog a buddy of mine hunted against in an rqe in S.C. to do some pretty big things. He was independent, fast, and dead accurate. He was treeing coon that the other dogs didn't even know were around. I spectated on the cast so I know what I'm talking about. This was a young walker male (and I am not a walker person to say the least) that was out of aworld hunt winner and If I am told correctly, the way he hunted was the same way his sire won the world hunt. I will not mention the dog's name quite yet because I want to sit back and see how he does. He can and will get it done in any hunt he is put in, big or small. One of the best hounds I have ever hunted with!

So elvis youre telling me that if a dog is treed lets say a minute before another do you honestly think that a dog is going to run that same track and put it up the same tree?

i agree that it's possible to get there way behind another dog and be on the same track. i've seen dogs wind a coon and get there while another one is working the track on the ground and gets there late. both dogs are treeing honest and not relying on the other. now, if the one that was behind just quit working and ran to the tree just because there's a dog barking up, that's a different story.
The whole point of having a compitetion hunt is to see who has the best dog. When these hunts started ALL breeds were PACK dog's. THEY SHOULD STILL BE PACK DOGS. I want a dog that takes a track he knows he can tree at the end of it and if he isn't working a track when another dog opens he needs to get there and try and help tree that coon. Should be tree it first? That would be icing on the cake. It would be pretty sad if your dog struck a track and mine came and took it away from him and treed first. If that happens alot to you then maybe you need to look at what's on the end on your leash.

I Guess before you can have this discussion you need to be on the same page about what a mee tooo dog is. Im not talking about a dog that might honor another dogs strike if he doesnt have anything going and work that track and tree with company. To me a meee tooo dog is the one that seems to always be hanging around doing nothing but will bust through the timber like a bullet to get treed on another dogs coon that they never worked a bit for third or fourth strike and second tree. They hardly ever take minus cause there not really hunting but they catch 100 or 125+on every coon treed Maybe you guys dont see it often but around here seems like theres one in every cast.
I had a dog in the 92 Autumn Oaks Nt Champions, I got 2nd place nt champions, this was before another UKC continuous changing the rules over the years. What I mean is back then they only placed 1 Grnt, 3 Nt Ch and 10 Reg, now its what 3, 5, and 10. Anyways this dog I had I got 687.5 plus points and drawed out of StateLine Coon hunters in the hills at St. Leon. My dogs name was Razor Blade he was a very independent coon dog and got under 4 coons by himself that night, so let this encourage you to bring your dog to Oaks, if you don't play you cannot win.
csnowgren im am not hunting a threat pup. i hunt red dogs and only red dogs. i have been to the last four hunts and my male wouldnt even think about hunting with any other dogs. he will get by himself and get treed and he is very accurate. i never done anything to make him independent he, just does not have any trust in the other dogs to be right.
Tim if a dog aint independent it aint gonna win come on man you know this thats why you got a first on Junior cause he is independent...You will have just as much chance as i will..im gonna be hunting a english dog im trying to finsh out and he will not tree with another dog so dont be trying to find a excuse so you can be with lucy go up there and hunt just have fun...Thats what im doing and to me thats whats it is all about...
justin if you are hunting a dog it wont even tree by itself .let alone with company
