How long do ya'll shine.....

the tree before you just give up looking. My female was treed last night in what used to be an old fence row and nearly every tree on that line seemed like it grew in to one another. I aint saying by no means that the coon crossed cause if I dont see anything I just go ahead and call it like it is...slick. The reason I hated not to find this one is since I have had her the only two time she pulled up short she was half hearted treeing. I kinda knew before I got to her I wouldnt find anything, but last nioght she was just nuts on that tree. I could hear her jumping well before I got to the tree and when I got there and saw her absolutely nuts on this tree I knew she had it...shows what I know. I hated to leave not finding it but we searched 50 yards of that fence row for 30 minutes looking for that sucker and nothing, tried squalling to at least make it move but best we could tell the only limbs moving were from the nice breeze that was blowing. Oh well, since I have had her thats 3 empties and 1 grinner in about 45-50 trees (I have to check my journal), that aint to bad is it? Anyways, how long do you shine before giving up?

I try to do the best job I can in 10 minutes. I always practice as if I was on a cast.

10-15 minutes. Usually if you don't find it by then - your slick. Only time I spend longer is on a young dog with a tree that is difficult to shine - I'll spend the time looking for that little hole to see the tree and maybe find his coon.

Not long

To be honest, I really do not shine that long in the summer. The coon is going to stay up the tree (I don't kill coon in the summer), I am not competition hunting, and it is so hot, I don't want my dogs to burn out. Most of my dogs know if they have a coon or not and I pretty much can tell whether they think they have him or are just making an educated guess. I know my dogs from hunting them during kill season and I will easily give them the benfit of a doubt in the summer. In the winter, it is a different story.

Well, I have to go with Redtick on this one...LOL! I don't waste a whole lot of time in the summer either. Usually under 5 minutes. Well, I don't shine much longer than that in the winter either, 'cause if I ain't found it by then, it's probably not there. If I've made a few trees that I haven't found anything, I might make a longer attempt, but that's usually the norm...

Generally speaking...

I have never spent as long as I did last night shining. It was just that she seemed very determined that it was up there and since there was a nice breeze blowing and it didnt feel all that bad out I just kept looking. Now I didnt put a watch on it but it seemed like a good 30 minutes to me and with everything overlapping I just hated to call it like it was but I eventually did. I dont comp hunt so I dont mind spending a little extra time but thats just me. Also gets aggravating going to empty tree which I done a lot of in the past. I dont spend much time in the winter looking cause with no leaves it aint hard to find it if its there but even with the leaves so far either me or my lil bro havent had to difficult time finding them this year as opposed to the last dog I had. (guess that tells you why he is now known as last dog I had LOL) And one more thing, after going back and rereading my journal I see I made a mistake. She has been cut loose 43 times and treed 36, 3 slick, 1 possum, the rest money. That still aint bad.

Usually,I wont spend more than 10 mins searching a tree,but.....
One night,about 4 or 5 years ago,I was hunting a young dog.He hit a good track,and was moving it real good.Pulled up treed and was flat blowing the top out of it.I shined and squalled,broke sticks,banged on the tree,every thing I could think of for 1 hour before I got him to look.
If only I would have had a tape player and a Skynyrd tape with me.LOL!

I make a loop around it. Probably 3 or so min this time of yr. Its either gonna look or not. Hard to spot a well hid body this time of yr. Most times if they are there. You'll see them pretty quick anyhow. Bores me to shine,shine, shine.
