Summer Heat question

What kind of things do you do in the summer to help your hounds cope with the hot, muggy nights? ie diet changes or other thoughts.

I hunt as close as possible to water and if it is within reasonable distance, I walk the dogs to water after every tree. The tough part is when they strike off the lead, then I usually unsnap them and let them go again. But, often in the areas I hunt during the summer, the coons stay close to water anyway, so the dogs get lots of chances to get in and get cooled off.

I do the same. If you have ever been over to the millstadt plott sec. and drawn me as a guide you know my spots are almost all river bottom and flood plain. I am looking for the little extra things if there are any that i can do to help.

I also keep water in the truck.

When exercising hot, soak em down every chance you get and try to keep em hydrated.

I watch mine for hyperthermia: dizzy, loss of balance, difficult to command, just acting clown like, bright pink / red skin - on noses, in ears, on belly, hyperventilation, etc.

There was a fellow in Louisiana two years ago killed a very promising young lab while she was retrieving in water - and, she was in hunting shape.
