Corn is coming soon...Who hunts it?

I have several corn fields near the house and have permission to take my young hound in them when the corn comes on. I've always been one to hit the swamps and never have tried corn fields before. Some of you guys that hunt them, do you hunt along the edge where the corn rows meet the woods or down the middle of the field? Do most the coons run far or just up along the field? Do the coon usually hit the field late or just after dark?

Posted by buckeyebuck on 06-11-2009 09:43 AM:

Just cut them up the edge and the fun will begin. The coon will be in and out of the corn all night. The dogs will find a track from the edge to the middle of the field. Some of them corn field chases can take a while the coon will run up and down the corn rows.

I got

a farmer here in Virginia Beach who raises sweet corn. His farm is surrounded by marsh on 3 sides. His farm also is on a main road going into Sandbridge Beach where a lot of tourists rent beach houses for their summer vacation.Needless to say,he grows a LOT of sweet corn because they are his biggest customer.Man ol' man, that is one helluva place to train a pup. That corn attracts them like a magnet.Won't be long either.

I can't imagine coonhunting for any length of time and not hunting in the corn. Don't worry about how or where to do it. Just do it.

A little

I have hunted the corn alittle wish I had some around here that I could hunt by myself, I got a pup that would be ready for the corn this year.

I've seen corn hunt both ways - turning in the middle and down the edge - i've always rathered just turn them down the edge, they seem to go in the right direction better. We get some good chases in the corn in the fall, you can get some bad runners or have ones just pop up off the side.

We got corn all over where I hunt. Corn fields seperated by fairly old, wide fencerows. Can't beat it. I let them go down the edge and the fun starts quick. And it works anytime from evening to morning and even sometimes in the middle of the day I've seen a chase start in a cornfield.

wonder if the corn in the middle of the field is that much
better than around the edge where there protection is
(trees} are if your running the big 1 in the middle?

around here they would rather have the cherries than the corn

My nieghbor has about a 2 acre patch of sweet corn. Every summer, I run my dogs thru there several times a week. They keep the coons outa the corn, and my family and I get all the sweet corn we want. It's a very good deal!

yeah they seem to usually cut them down the middle in hunts hoping to get them split up ... i'm yet to see when that really ever workes right.

I hunt corn from roasting ear time until its tilled under. The exception might be few weeks when the acorns drop.

Corn provides some challenges. Just dumping in corn doesn't guarantee a quick strike or easy coon. We have so much corn that you have to know your coons and your terrain to know what corner or what edge of what cornfield they will be working. I can dump on top of them or I can dump from a ways away and make a dog hunt to them.

I can tell what kind of a "good track" track dog you have by how long it trails around in corn. More than 20-30 minutes and the grade starts dropping fast.

There's opportunities for a dog to get treed while other dogs are screaming laps right by to find out how well your dog will hold pressure.

I love corn, lol.

Memories...

...Bob and I hunted here in MA in the 70s... and I remember most the cornfields... Not too many left around here... The biggest thing I remember... besides being SHORT(which I still am)...scared to Death of being lost...and those SPIDERS that throw a ROPE between cornstalks... LOL... I learned early to FOLLOW the leader and let them "blaze the trail" for me

LOL... I have enjoyed "listening" on here to the tales of the corn races! It seems that so much land is still devoted to corn in some places that the coon just HAVE to give the dogs a good run......

Have fun out there, and watch out for those big old creepy spiders! HappyHunting Heather

if i have a 20-30 min race in a corn, the dogs better hope i dont get my hands on em cause that is no coon, and if one dog trees that hot of a coon they all better grab some of it

corn fields are by far the best way to start pups we never turn loose in the middle ALWAYS up the edge
