Squalling Rule
Do you have to wait your seven minutes even if there are dogs out, but not struck in or can you squall right away?

You can squall anytime if all dogs are treed. but u have to wait the seven if another dog is running. im not sure if it has to be holding strike or not.
The rule says all dogs struck must be handled. If a dog is out running loose but not struck, that dog doesn't stop you from squalling. The instant that dog is struck, the judge should imform the cast to stop squalling.
Thanks, that is what I was wondering, about when a dog is struck in, do they need to stop.
correct answer jim
Is it a Scratchable First Offense ???? If you forget and Squall, can you be Scratched on the Spot??

Yes. Anytime you do anything that is against the rules, you have committed a scratch offense. The Advisor books refers to it as the "implied scratch".
hmmmmm
if the handler is scratched, then if the dog or dogs still out come into the tree will they be minused.

I don't think this is right. If all dogs are treed but not all dogs are handeled can you squall before the 7 minutes is up? Say 3 dogs are treed. 3 minutes into search time the 4th dog is treed 200 yards away split. The 4th dog is treed but not handeled. I think you need to wait till the 7 is up before you squall.

You can squall as soon as all dogs are handled.

We do that all the time. We aren't suppose to. I recall being told by The Great White Father up at Kalamazoo once that the cast cannot agree to break the rules. It would be the same as spectators shining the tree, they can't do it even if all castmembers agree to allow them. Because that would give that cast an unfair advantage over the casts that are following the rule.
I didn't knowingly break the rules, but I was thinking AKC ( can squall as long as no dog is treed and unhandled in close proximity). Our hunt was so miserable I was blowing the reeds out hoping my dog would come in so I could withdraw.
JiM, you're referring to the "if all parties agree line". Like scoring trees out of order, driving during hunt time & etc.
jim you are wrong on this one you do not handle the dog's that are still struck in and running. they have the time to run and get treed some place . and untill all dogs are handled or the 7 is up. struck in or not .now if they come in to the tree after the 5 is up yes you handle them.

i voted to let them shine. When i see a guy at the hunts with a couple kids tagging along it gives me hope about the future of our sport. its pretty hard for a 10 year old kid not to put his light in the tree. i have even found my coon and called someones kid over and said look up right there buddy is tat a coon i cant tell, and when he said ,THERE HE IS i said good job you got him. If someone wants to scratch me for that so be it, the smile on the kids face is way more important. Lets try to remember why we are out there.
