pups voice (bark) is GONE???
just got a 8 week old B&T pup four days ago.keep her in a pin. After the second day; she would bark but no noise would come out. Not sure what to do. She seems ok, except the fact she cant bark. I think she barked herself mute. lol. kinda crazy but im starting to worry a little now. Has anyone else seen this? And what do i do? I dont want a mute coondog!
had a walker pup do the same thing. she is 8 months old and all she can do is squeak. hope your turns out better. have been told antibiodics for a few days will help.
In a pen at 8 weeks?
Thats a bit young to be by herself. Put her in with another dog for company.
As far as her bark...give her childrens cough medicine/sore throat medicine. Soak her food for a week or so so it doesn't irritate her throat more.
Plottluvr, thanks for the advice. Blake, not at all what i wanted to hear. But thank you for replying. Im sorry about your dog. I really hope that doesnt happen to mine. I couldnt have that.
plottluvr, i used ur advice and went and grabbed one of its litter mates and put it in there with her. The breeder is a friend of mine so he dident care. He said if that dident work, we'll put her back with the others at his house. Now, does that cough medicine really work? may try that tomarro. is that just suppose to help with the sore throat? I may start giving her can dog food as well!
The cough syrup helps with soreness. Also keeps her from trying to bark. Make sure to wet her food. Keep her quiet as much as possible her voice will come back but it will have a speak at the beginging or end. Had a pup lose his for a while came back Super LOUD and easy to call b/c I can guarentee they aint another that sounds like him.

I was told by a friend to use lemon juice and honey mix. put it in a syringe (NO needle). easy squirt it in the back of the throat. try to do this 2 to 3 times per day for at least 3 days. He said it works.
thanks M.TARLTON,
ill make sure to use can food or damp dry dog food. Its good to hear that other people have had the same problem and it still work out
Got a pup last year at 16 weeks old. Put her in a pen by herself (felt like she was old enough) and she barked constantly. After the 3rd day it got quiet and I said "thank goodness" she has finally settled in. Well she didn't settle in she just barked herself out. We tried everything mentioned here and lots of other things we were suggested and nothing helped. We got rid of her at 1 year old as a pet. She never got her voice back. To the day she left us her bark was hoarse and muffled.
Do what you can to keep her from getting to that point. We decided to just ignore it and give her time to settle in and that turned out to be a big mistake! Unlike you I did not have another pup I could put with her and did not think she would old enough to be kenneled with an adult dog.
Hope her voice comes back and it all works out for you.

Do LA 200 for 3 days straight. Give 3 cc by mouth for 3 days stop and repeat if needed. This works for sure..

My dog lost her bark to not much more then a hoarse whisper. After a couple weeks of wet food, cough syrup and keeping her as quiet as I could it came back to normal. She has a LOUD deep bark for a female and I didn't want her to lose it.
If you don't do anything for it then she'll lose her bark for good.
plottluvr thats what what im hopeing for sure. i got her to the vet today and got antibiotics to give her for a week. hopefully between that and wet food, a litter mate, and one or two doses of cough suryp will do the job. Thats all i know to do; hope it works. Thanks everyone for your help!
Give her the cough meds like you'd give a sick kid. Every 6 hrs or so. Get one of those dose syringes from the pharmacy. The kind used on little kids, she'll spit less out.
robitussion has always worked for me but never had one tha young also soaking her food works wonders.
it seems assinine to me to give then antibiotics as the cause is known and it's not an infection of any kind causing it so what would an antibiotic do for the pup.
i know for myself honey with lemon helps to soothe my throat it sure couldn't hurt the pup.
by the way canned dog food is useless highest protein i have seen is 12 percent in adequate for any dog also the moisture content in most is 8o percent the moisture is water added so 80 percent has absolutely no food value and the other 20 percent is poor quality/
the only thing canned food is good for is flavor for a picky eater

I was thinking the same thing about the antibiotics. Sounds like a vet that was just making an extra $$ to me. This was caused by excessive barking not an infection. But hey I don't have a vet degree so why am I even commenting?!?

We had a sudden temp drop sunday night; got pretty cold. We got her that day. Well she got loose and ran away that nite when we took our kids to the movies. (dident find her till the next evening). After she barked all day and probably really barked that night; The vet said that the sudden cold weather and her straining her voice could have done something. Like laryngitis. So im guessing the meds where to decrease the chance of infection and fight off inflamation. He could have been trying to make a buck; But I figured that at least it wouldent hurt. The whole visit vet, meds and all was 30 dollars. Never hurts to try. Ill try the cough meds tonite too. And the can food was mix with dry food to make it a little wetter and easier to get down.
i doubt the vet was trying to make a buck because you can pick up LA200 at any farm supply store.. i use it and works good on my dogs..but you still need to find a way to keep the pup from barking so she does'nt do any more damage to her throat..

Thanks guys! Im trying everything yall have told me. Good news is, She bark and somthing came out for the first time in two days this evening after i left from feeding her. So thats good. Wasent loud but my fingers are crossed hoping she has a full recovery and makes me a loud strong coondog some day.
pups voice (bark) is GONE???
I have had experience with this problem and finally narrowed it down ...Have you given this hound IVENMEC by mouth ??????? This crap works good as an injectable , but will cause a hound , young or old to loose there voice.

Oh Goodness.
OK, when a dog barks themselves out, they're hoarse and or mute because of strained vocal cords. Antibiotics WILL NOT do anything. The vocal cords are not infected, they're strained. When you yell allot, say at a football game...have you ever taken antibiotics for your strained throat? Of course not.
Alright, Ivermec had nothing to do..and have NEVER had anything to do with a dog losing it's voice. Ivermec is NOT "hot" as some people say. It's simply a liquid wormer, that doesn't taste great but that's all it is none the less.
Your pup was being a pup and over did it is all...probably ran it's mouth all day because it's in a pen by itself for the first time and wants out. Every dog is different, so you wont know what to expect until after it heals up...around a week from now. Some recover completely, some dont. I would highly doubt the dog will be mute from now on. The hard thing is, as an adult you'll never know if this incident had any effect on it's mouth. If this dog, when mature doesn't have a huge mouth....well allot of dogs just are not loud, so was the dog going to be one of those or was it due to barking out as a pup?
I've got a dog that did the same thing, but recovered and ended up with an OK mouth...nothing incredible but I could find him and hear him. He's a stuborn hound and runs his mouth all day in his kennel no matter what I do. He's 9 now, and in the past 3 years or so his mouth has gotten terrible. Thats over a life time of barking WAY too much.
So, just let it run it's course and see what you have in a few years. Some kids cough syrup might make it's throat feel better until it comes back. Changing things around so that the dog doesn't bark much for a few days would be the best thing.

I agree with the ivermec not bothering them, but I have an 8 month old pup that you can't hear at 70 yards. she had a good voice when I got her at 3 months old and lost it in about 4 days. she barked untill she could only squeak and she still squeaks. tried most of those remedys with no luck. she is the 2nd pup I have seen do this.
bark gone too
i have a walker that is the same way was wondering the dosage of honey and lemon?
Ok guys, After 2 weeks of no bark; her voice is back. Not completely normal but back loud again. It pretty much all came at once in 1 or 2 nites. The puppy bark that she had (all pups have) is gone. She now has a low (deeper) pitch. She may not be 100% but she's at least 90% back. Only time will tell how she'll do when she's grown. This is what i did! I was furtunate enough to barrow a litter mate to put with her, so i did. that kept her from trying to bark as much. Then soften her food by wetting her dry dog food, and then draining it. Then gave her an antibiotic (not sure what that did;but thats what the vet said to do). Then every so once in a while i gave her childrens cough syrip. And thats it. her voice is back strong. Thank yall for all your help.
