-- Ethics question. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=280019)
Ethics question.
If you 100% for a fact know that you have no intention of hunting in the World hunt should you hunt the RQE?
If you place high enough you are taking a spot from someone that will attend.
OTOH if you are good enough to attend the World you should have beat one more cast (but we all know having a good draw is key to getting a higher score so this may or may not be the point).
Just thought this would be interesting to discuss and see the different views on the subject.

quote:...good question....................alot of folks hunt the RQE's without the intention of ever going to the zones because if they place a night champion ANYWHERE in the hunt, they get a night champion win...............................registered dog, 3 chances for that coveted 1rst place win (1rst, second, or third)............my view would be I'm not "taking" anything from another dog.....THEY didn't win the opportunity............ps-got 2 qualified right now, and have EVERY intention of going...........see y'all at the Zones...........

............now, as far as the Shows go..........if folks did not enter if they were not going.........the RQE shows would be VERY small..............everybody knows there are maybe 20 dogs capable of winning the World Show..........jmo............how do you feel about it, Rip????????__________________

Well the reason this came up is because I happen to be off this weekend and am considering hunting the RQU Sat night, but there is absolutely positively no way I will be able to make the Zones.
I would only be hunting in it for fun and points and I got to thinking about it. If I got lucky and IF I won my cast and IF I were on a cast that was in enough coon to get in then I may knock out a better dog with an owner wanting to go to the World that just happened to draw thinner coon in a different cast. This would make the competition less at that RQE, and keep someone at home that would have otherwise went etc.
I wouldn't let it stop me from hunting cause like you said I would be hunting to get points on my dog, not to knock anybody out of anything, and to help support the club. If they want to go that bad they can try at another RQE, it's not like there aren't plenty of other chances.
I was just wonderin what others thought as well, thought it would be good discussion on something besides politics etc.

I don't see any ethics problem at all. I hunt them and there is no way I'd go to Tn. to hunt.
A person can hunt their dog at several RQEs to try to qualify so I don't think losing one place is all that big of a deal.
Besides opportunities change all the time. Right now, you can't go, but between now and then your situation may change. I would say if the finals are near you you should go for it. How often are the finals close to you.

Opps, I forgot to mention I was really worried when I see a post from a doctor about ethics.

I have 5 RQE's within a 1.5 hour drive every year. I'm not worried about someone getting my spot.

I think the RQE's are open to everyone for a reason. Competition. With all the dogs that go to the RQE it means a little more if your dog gets through to the next level. JMHO

I think if you win then the other dogs you beat didn't deserve to go anyway. I got a great dog but if he doesn't win it doesn't break my heart. They got a long way to go from winning an RQE to getting to TN.

I'm not a comp hunter , but no. If I wasn't commited to going all the way to the finals , I wouldn't do it.
I'm not going to take that chance away from someone who is. Just wouldn't feel right to me.
Just like our bear or turkey kill tags. If someones not commited to go all the way , I don't want them taking a tag away from me.
To me , it's the same thing.

I don't think it's a question of ethics at all. For one, it's an honor just to have a dog qualified for the World Championship whether you attend or not. I know in the Quarter Horse industry, nobody asks are you going to the World Show...they ask are you qualified for the World Show? It really is an honor just to be qualified. I think to be able to advertise that a dog has been qualified for the World 5 years in a row, or whatever the streak might be, says alot about a dog.
But also, anyone trying to finish a dog out that doesn't take advantage of the bonus championship points is crazy. The RQE's were designed for everyone to participate whether they had plans to go on or not. If a high percentage of hunters are not doing so based on a question of ethics, we need to revisit the whole format. But I honestly don't believe that's the case. I hope not anyway.

its just another hunt with a big bonus
go fer it!!!! if the dog cant beat yours then they dont deserve to go to the world?!?!?!.... think of it as i f he cant beat yours ,,, you mighttta had the big winner?!?!?
If I was out West like was mentioned I'd have to give it serious thought but in the busy areas I'd hunt if I wanted to. The RQE's are a process of elimation and just give you the oportunity to try the next step if you want to. Who knows, the dog may be cranking and wind up in some young guys truck on his way to TN. in Sept.
I just wish the RQE's paid Perf Points. A pr pup beats a GrNtCh in a 50 dog field and gets zero points? Don't seem right.

I didn't say I wouldn't be there, just said I won't be hunting.

I think it's set up that way to keep a GrNt from getting performance points for beating up on 3 PR dogs.
