Dog First Aid
Can anyone give me tips on making a Dog 1st Aid kit, and first aid tasks for my Dog I need to learn?
Also, if I were to go on a long hike with my dog should I get the "dog shoes" to protect his pads or are there excercises to get them ready for long hikes?

I wish I could find the pressurized saline here! I use it to wash out wounds and so forth. Good stuff. But you ought to be able to find saline in a regular plastic bottle in the contact lense area of your pharmacy.

First Aid Box
We've always used a good sized plastic tool box or tackle box for our animal first aid boxes. they are good sized and easily stored without taking up too much room. We used them for years for our horses and now use one for the doogs as well. good thing about them is they can also double and first aid for humans too! Needed them more for that than the animals! Find ya one about 2 to 2 1/2 foot long and about 9 to 12 inches tall and that should do ya pretty good.

Tarascon, if you need pressure and can't find aerosol cans - get a couple of spare caps that will fit your plastic bottle and drill about 5 or 6 tiny holes in it. When you squeeze the bottle it will have a pretty good amount of pressure. When you're done, put the cap back on that doesn't have holes in it.
Good luck, Hoss
Mudman, I have a Black and Tan that we got from a rescue. He has a large prey drive so he must have been hunted with in the past. I am trying to get from my wife permission to get another one as a puppy so I can learn how to coonhunt. (Any of you married men know what I'm talking about when I mean asking for permission)
I realize that being 30 and trying to learn the sport at my age may seem odd, but I never even went hunting until my half brother took me out Turkey hunting at 28 and I loved it.
I figure that since my wife and I camp and hike a lot an easy skill to learn and develope on my own is dog care. The online kits seemed cheesy and generic so I wanted to see what you all pack. I compare it to first aid kits for people in wal-mart versus what we carry for ourselves in the Army. I figured I'd make my own, and with Mamakiti2's case pointer and cpeter's list I've got my start point.
I figured after dog care navigation would be skill two. I've got a garmin tracking collar ordered already to learn how to use in case he breaks away while we are out. I know with my land navigation skills I have the human end covered if the equipment works recovering the dog will be easy. I keep reading the garmin post with every update learning what I can now.
Hopefully if everything works out I'll be able to find a group that might put up with my rookie skills and let me learn from scratch how to do this. I don't think I'd ever want to compete, I just want to do it for fun.

My Hubby and I didn't start out working with Coonhounds until this last fall. we had always had beagles and bird dogs before. (probably why we fell in with the Walker dogs!) We got in with one of our local hunt clubs and the "old timers" there have been nothing but helpful! Most of them love passing on thier knowldege to us "young pups". Just find when and where some of your local clubs are having hunts and shows and jsut go watch and talk with them. We've gotten to be good frinds with a number of people and there is usually someone going out and working thier dogs most any given night if he wants to go out and work one of our younger dogs with somoenes older dog.
"old timers" & "young pups" - not necessarily in years but in experience
