dog returning to tree
It has been a long time since I participated in many UKC nite hunts. It used to be a dog would be scratched for returning to a tree already scored on. I cannot remember how many times it took for this to happen. It seems like it was two or three times but I cannot remember. I have searched the rules and cannot locate the answer. Is this rule still in effect? If so how many times does it take before being scratched? Any response would be helpfull.
Dogs can go back as manytimes as you want to pull them off the same tree and use up hunting time for it.
one of the most annoying faults in a dog! In ukc a dog can go back as many times as the handler will let him!
I spectated on a cast at walker days last year and a dog went back to the same tree 7 times! Talk about burning up hunt time!

I use and recommend Kelley's K-Lights.
Am I correct by saying this use to be a rule years ago? does any of the old timers remember this rule?
btt
I think it used to be 3 times and the dog was scratched but this isnt in affect now.
i wish it was a rule. i like the go back twice and your scratched rule

That would be fine, as long as the dog being pulled off the tree is being taken a decent amount off the tree. Not just pulled off, walked 10 yds and then recast to the other dogs, ecspecially if there is a coon in that dogs tree.
I BEEN HUNTING IN THE HUNTS SENCE I WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND THAT WAS 1978 AND DOG COULD BACK TO THE TREE AS MANY TIMES AS THEY WANTED . I THINK YOU ARE THINK ABOUT PCA WITCH IS NOW PKC THEY HAD THAT RULE BACK THEN BUT UKC NEVER HAS

wish they would look n to thast rule,i think a dog should get scratched fdor going back to a tree, after its scored on
I think I may be thinking about PKA which was around here about 10 years ago or so.
i don't know why they don't have a rule dealing with this it really annoys me. if the dog goes back twice your scratched! better luck next time.

This wouldnt be a bad rule for a fully trained dog or a well trained dog.
But we all know that everyone is putting dogs into the hunts earlier and earlier all the time. These dogs are doing a great job at having the coon and consistant.
But they are not fully trained as far as handling goes. most are shooting every coon the dog trees out on these young dogs and that is why they go back to the tree so easily. nobody in there right mind is gonna start whipping a young dog for going back to the same tree when there is a coon there.
As for the older dogs that still go back, yes I say that was poor training.

personaly how do you punish a hound for doing what there bred to do,however if my hound went back for the second time i would and have withdrawn ,as it wasn't the houinds fault i just weaned her pups and she hadn't been hunted in 10 weeks but i was asked to quide and if i was quiding i wanted to hunt and took her hunting

My opinion, an older broke dog shouldn't go back. Now the ones that do, I would bet some, not all get alot of coon shot too them!
Training and the right training needs to be done.
As someone else stated the ones that get every coon treed shot to them they don't understand why they are being pulled off the tree now without the coon being shot.

Why worry about what someone else's dog is doing? Train your's not to go back and you can be treeing coons while they are getting their dog off of the same tree over and over. I really don't see why a rule is needed on this.

No. No way. The rule just doesn't strectch that far.
I notice some feel that going back is excusable for a pup but not for an older dog. PKC hunts the youngest dog in the comp world. They hold a major event that is limited to pups less than 1 year old. And those pups don't go back because if they go back twice in PKC they are done. Someone said good trainers fix it, poor trainers make excuses for it. I agree.
quote:Yep! I dont see what the problem is..Heck I can turn around and cut mine with a dead coon laying at the bottom of a tree..Some of yall like to move to a new spot after you tree one???? Its pretty simple really..If they were to make this a rule"WHICH THEY SHOULD" dont hunt your half broke pup before its ready..About a 100 dollars worth of entries fees and you'll be wanting to train one or wait till it is ready for the hunts..

no one has said is was excusable for a pup to do it.. It was just pointed out why these pups were going back.
having every coon shot out to it and it isnt fully trained..
As for myself I will not whip a pup for going back just so I could hunt the hunts.
But there would come a time when it would progress and progress quickly on doing what I am asking it to do..
But so far I really havnt had a problem with it so I will have to just wait untill the problem arises to really determin how much of it I would be will to put up with and how long..
as for the pups hunting the major event ,, I wont even say anything about the major event where you dont have to see a coon to win..and yes I have hunted in that kc, just not my cup of tea

They don't go back because they are getting coons shot out to them. They go back because their handler allows it.
"I will not whip a pup for going back....." There yah go. Thats why they go back, because they can.
Yea there ya go, come hunt with my dogs.. Then tell me I cant train a dog to not only be the best it can be but also handle..
I'll bet you ruin more than you make if you whip a pup for doing what you trained/bred it do to..
Ask around how my dogs handle..
And if you think they go back because someone lets them, then you have alot to learn..
Yes, they KEEP going back because they were allowed to do so and never trained not to, BUT they go back because they were trained/bred to run and tree coon not go find a tree and bark and then leave to find another tree to bark at..
or maybe that is what you train your dogs to do, heck thats what they have to do to win major events as pups.

I still say you take a hound and shoot out alot of coon then all a sudden stop shooting. What do you think will happen then when the dog trees and he's not rewarded. Turn him loose and I'll show you several hounds go back. And Id bet thats because they have been rewarded all the time or near all the time!
Broke dogs don't need all the coon. Not saying everyone is doing that either. just my opinion on this.
Not all hounds are the same. Some need more shot out and some can go all year without them, and still tree coon! thats my type!
