Crossing MT Curs with Hounds?

This is for the pleasure hunters,
Has anyone ever bred a Treeing Walker hound to a Mountain Cur?
If so what kind of dog did you end up with?
Im trying this myself, to try and get closer hunting tree dogs, for my personal use.
I like both hound and cur, but would like a dog that meets in the middle, handles and hunts like a Cur, but with a good mouth, and nose to work colder tracks.
I am not going to try and register these dogs, and they will not be entered into competition, just used in the woods pleasure hunting.

I hunt alone most of the time, and the hounds leaving the world on me, is starting to get old, they end up a mile or more treed often, and wont walk back with you, you have to put them on a leash, or they are gone again. I would like a dog that hunts close, checks in, and in general, is easy to handle.

I have experimented with the Mountain Curs a little, and found that they can tree a Coon, but just are not able to work colder tracks, I also dont really like the mouth on them, would like to have a hound mouth.
Basicly I thought a cross between the two, might bring some of the traits of both. But have not had much experience with this.
I have also hunted Mountain Curs with hounds, and that works, pretty good also, but often times the Cur will take off with the hounds, and be gone long range also.
But when you hunt them by themself, the Curs hunt closer, and handle easier than the hounds. The hounds will often strike out of hearing, and be deep deep when they get treed, if you dont have a road, you have an incredible walk, and often have to cross several deep creeks to get to them.
Friday morning my hounds ended up two miles from where they were released, they were treed with a Coon, but dang there had to be a Coon closer than that.

I know a guy who has some good cur dogs and I think someone recently brought a walker to breed to his stud. You can catch him on the cur and fiest board. He is mdmorrisson or catch himon another board. www.mdwfp.com/forums and look under the hunting dog forum. Or I can get you his number, he likes to talk dogs and hunting.

The Kovac family has been doing it for a couple years. I talked to Ray in the past and he a knowledgeable man when it comes to this type of cross. I think he would be a good one to consult with.

Richard

You might want to look at some of the black & tan breed. They're easy to find. They're the ones with extra 4 to 5 toes on their hind legs. But of course everybody that breeds them won't tell you that they have cur in them. I guess they want you to believe god made them that way.

I have herd they are good, but are not common in my area.
We do have some MT Curs, and Treeing Walkers.
I like both breeds, but they both hunt and handle differently.

I've crossed treeing walkers and Bluetick on Catahoula dogs and have been pleased with the resultsas far as coon dogs, hog dogs, and deer dogs where they can be used .If I can hunt it with a dog I'll hunt it.The crosses I've made have had a lot of sense and worked very well.

You might want to look at leopard hounds.

Let me start by saying I've had a walker in my pen since the Houses Bawlie days. And lucky enough over the years to say I've had three "once in a lifetime" Walker dogs. I still have two Walkers. One is a female off the old man. I also have a Kemmer female (unless Mr. Kemmer says otherwise) and I have two male leopards. I crossed one leopard on each female and kept a pair from each cross. The Kemmer cross produced saddle back plot looking dogs that will open on cold tracks and all in all do what I want. But if I turn out with go yonders they will too and they never split tree. The Walker cross pair also were running and treeing well before a year old but the female is so independant that she split trees half the time and never gets struck at my feet. I threaten all the time to give half of her to a PKC type of hunter.

On the other hand, I like to turn out the "wild indians" for a couple of minuites and then turn out a leaopard. It's likely he'll tree a lay-up in a couple hundred yards, or at least get struck close enought to tell what's going on. And he can move a cold track.

I guess you're like me. I've had about enough of hearing dogs strike almost out of hearing and by the time I drive close enough to tell what they're doing, they're treed.

Cur & Walker

This has been going on for over 50 yrs. The only registery that you couldn't register them would be AKC, depending on the appearance and color of the dog. When the time is right, they too will be part of the melting pot.
It's a time of CHANGE, Cur breeders looking to cross on hound, and Hound breeders looking to cross on Curs. Thats how they got to where they are today!

Good luck.

Hound/Cur cross.

He is the dog on the tree. His mother is the brindle cur off the tree. His sire is Tn Hardrock so that makes him B&T/Walker/Cur cross. He is fun to hunt on coon and squirrel. Handles like a dream,,,,hunts out the woods you cast him in.

Going out of the country is why I only run 1 dog at a time now. It seams that after they get to knowing each other real well, they take off way too far for me. I want them to hunt the woods thorough, not run a mile then tree a coon ir it happens to be a hot track they run across.

Posted by Zip7 on 06-28-2009 05:18 AM:

This gyp is half walker half cur. She is about 18-19 months old now.

I started her at about 10 months hunting with an older cur I had, and after she go the hang of it, she was a much better coon dog than the older cur.

I hunted her on squirrel too, and she will tree them, but since she got going on coon pretty well I only coon hunt her.

When she started, I didn't think she would make much of a dog. She did really well last september, but then went in her first heat during october, and when she came out of it, she was completely retarded for about three weeks. Toward the end of that, I hunted her with a couple of good hounds one night, and she went along with them, but didn't do much but watch. I tied her back and wouldn't let her have any of the coon.

From that night on, she has been lights out - great dog. Before that she was looking for a tree with a coon in it, and since then she looks for a track to run. In thick coon, she has smoked every cur dog I have hunted her with and she treed over 50 coon on her own in December / January.

Now, she does hunt close on her own, but she doesn't handle like a cur. When she has a nose full of something, she won't come back. When she trees, there ain't no calling her off the tree, I have to leash her and drag her away. She doesn't leave the country, but if she hits a hot track, she will go wherever it goes. I have only had her lose a hot track twice, both times on water.

She doesn't do well with cold tracks. Hot tracks she runs wide open like a hound would run a deer. Really fast. But no grubbing up cold tracks and working them out. She is open on track, but in thick coon and short easy tracks she is quiet. She doesn't have a big mouth, and she is chop/squall mouth on track, but she does bawl locate and chop tree.

She roads really well in front of the truck. She really is pretty much half like a hound and half like a cur. She has the bad traits of both as well though... hotter nosed than a hound and more hard headed than a cur. She is a tree minded dog who had to learn to track. I think this coming season will tell the tale on her, but I think she is going to be fine. Everyone who has hunted with her has been pretty impressed.

I have an English pup to start this season who is going to be the opposite - track minded and we need to work on her treeing. I think they will make a good pair.

I have had Grand Nite Champion English Coon Hounds and Grand Squirrel Champion Mt Curs. I would NEVER consider cross breeding them. Each has their own traits and should be kept seperate. As for all hounds hunting deep, not so. There are strains bred to hunt close. As for Curs hunting close, not so, there are strains that hunt deep.

Find some Walkers that are bred to hunt close. They are getting hard to find but they are there.
