hunt scenario.....what would you do......

..........1 minute left in the hunt..............you turn loose, there is a good chance the cast will not make the deadline by the time you get the hounds back............do you turn loose or walk out the minute?????????...I walk the minute out and don't cause somebody a cast win at an RQE..........

I'll walk, whether I'm 25 behind or 200 in the hole. You have a chance of striking a coon in that time, but very rarely will you get a tree that fast. If you do cut, most likely the dogs will get out of pocket and you'll have no chance what so ever of making deadline.

You got to hunt 120 minutes, not 119.

If I'm guiding, I would especially want to turn loose, anyway. I try to keep a dog that can get treed in a heartbeat and I try to know where a close coon is.

.........so, John.........are you saying everytime you make a tree, you call a time out and move???.....down here we walk 'em away from that tree and turn loose again in many cases..........if you do this also, you are not hunting 120 either as you view it..........we walk AT LEAST a minute from a tree, as to assure the hounds don't go back.........I personaly just wouldn't want to cost somebody a cast win over a minute...especially when you have hunted 1 hour and 59 and looked at 1 coon..........jmo............smiles.........ps--you can ask folks on here that have hunted my farm.........'bout as good a place as there is in middle Georgia......and I don't have any 1 minute coons........lol..........'course, I don't have feeder buckets either.......

We would have more than the problem of getting back to the club by deadline if you were such an @$$hole that you done me that way. Rules say WALK 1 MINUTE and recast dogs. Now with 1 minute left to go in the hunt, and you try and call time out to move locations for recasting I would prolly get wrote up for unsportsman like conduct b/c I wouldn't be happy with you. Most people won't even strike their dog in the first minute much less tree it.

If you are walking and don't have time out called then you are still "hunting". Please show me John what rule says that dogs must be loose and running for hunting time to be used! You would only call time out if new ground is needed to finish that minute and/or you are going to move by nehicle. Otherwise there isn't a need to stop time and therefore the minute will probably expire before you get the dogs cut back loose. Not to mention SPORTSMANSHIP!

Walking that minute is part of the hunt time.
If I'm behind less than 250 points I will turn loose and hope my dog slams a 1st and 1st.

I have been on casts when Elvis turned his dog loose with less than 2 minutes in the hunt and went in with another 225 on top of what he already had. In UKC points are everything. If you don't have enough to win, you don't lose anything by missing deadline.

If I'm an ahole cause I hunted 120 minutes, then so be it. But in my mind the ahole is the guy that won't finish a hunt.

........I understand how ya feel, JiM.........so if ya have 800+, the clubhouse is an hour away, and you've got about an hour and ten to get there.............figure on unsappin' that leash for the minute ole man............smiles..........

Don't take out of context what I said JiM. If there is 1 minute left in the cast, and you walk the min just like you are supposed to then you HAVE hunted 120 and finished the hunt. If some Ahole wants to call time out to move for 1 minute left in the hunt and makes you miss deadline and lets say costs you a first place win....how would you feel then?

Would you + a tree that you saw the coon in when you were walking away and shine time was over that you had already aggreed to circle? NO B/C time was up on that tree. SAME here walk a minute from tree to recast with 1 minute left in the hunt.....HOW is the time not over?

Casey, think about what you are saying. No ahole or anyone else can call time out with a minute left or an hour left. It takes a majority of the cast to call timeout. That purty well eliminates the possiblilty that time will get called with one minute left and deadline on the edge.

Go back and read the 1st post. No mention whatsoever about calling timeout. Where did the timeout come from?
Also walking a minute to recast is PKC/AKC. There is nothing in the UKC rulebook that says you must walk a minute or any specific time to recast. You can recast directly from the tree if the judge tells you to.

coon dawg brought up the time out and I ran with that LOL I'd walk it out either way b/c I don't own a dog that can tree a coon in a minute. Coons are also spread out pretty good and chances are slim to none of treeing one in that length of time.

If we are hunting in coon country up north where you could tree a pop up in a minute, or if we had been treeing'em quick all night, well I MIGHT could see that. If we are hunting in Texas and the cast wants to turn'em loose again, I hope like hell I'm guiding b/c I'm fixing to show'em that sportsman like thing for turning loose with a minute to go can work both ways.

Aww, if making up rules doesn't work, THEN we can admit the dog can't get it done, lol.

I know sometimes a dog being on the leash is part of the hunt. If its alright to burn 1 minute that way, then how much is too much? Those that will burn a minute will likely burn alot more. At some point it becomes an issue for other cast winners in the hunt, the ones that hunted the full 120 minutes. They won't call you ahole or bad sportsman, they will call you a CHEATER.

From my experenice most dogs around here that get treed in a "heartbeat" ain't one I want to have on my leash cause 9 out of 10 times that dude will be - instead of +. I'll take my dog that will tree the coon and get the + and you can have your mintute tree dog and take all the - you want!!

Yep, all kinds of things can go wrong in that last minute. All of them I can think of are related to the dog screwing up or not being trained right.

That last minute is an opportunity for minus and thats why its critical to the other casts that you have the full time to get to whatever score you and your dog rightfully deserve.

But you never answered the question. Neither of the 19 or so other people that said they'd walk off a minute did, either.

If burning 1 minute off the clock is acceptable, how much is unacceptable?

back a few years this happened to me with a couple of minutes left one guy wanted to turn back loose and we only had about 15 minutes till dead line. story short we turned loose deadline was up before we even got to the tree. poor sportman!
