Identifying Dogs Question

Hey everyone, I'm working on a presentation that will discuss the options available and the pro's and con's of each, for permanently identifying your dog. The obvious choices are dna analysis, micro chips, freeze branding and there are several others.

My question is, can anybody put me in touch with someone that has fought a legal battle regarding dog ownership where the identity of the dog was an issue? Doesn't matter what breed of dog it was. Doesn't matter whether they won or lost the case. Just want to talk to a few people that have been though it.

Lost or stolen animals, dog deal gone bad, etc. You know anyone that has been to court in an attempt to prove a certain individual dog was indeed their dog?

I don't have any first hand knowledge, but I was watching the Animal Planet show last night and it was the Animal Cops.
Every stray they pick up they wand to see if it has a chip, look for tattoos or brands. I bet they could tell of hundreds of success's in finding owners of stolen or lost pets. They sure do arrest a lot of people on that show.
They have a web site:
http://animal.discovery.com/fansite...animalcops.html

They sited last year in their Huston SPCA they picked up 9,767 dogs and 7,889 puppies.

Hey if you can contact them you might even get a spot on TV..."the biggest dog registry working with animal cops for the betterment of all dogs!" I can see it now, it's worth a shot! If you get a TV appearance , can my English Dogs and I get on with you??

Oh well, check it out! Good luck!

Good idea Doug. And I do remember that Jerry Lee now that you remind me.

Hey, I forgot to say, I need pictures. If any of you have photos of your freeze branded dog send them to me. Close up of the brand, photo of the full dog w/brand, etc.

Also, same with tattoos. Send me some pics of your dog's ink!

DNA would be the most undeniable identification - BUT that means you must FIND your dog. Microchips would work if they were taken to a shelter or again if you FOUND your dog they might prove it was yours, but IMHO the freeze branding in combination with one of these would be the best option, because I think the freeze branding might deter theft in the first place, but I've not done this yet because with redbones on the verge of being moved out of the misc group and into the hound group in AKC, there is a rule in AKC about markings identifying an owner/kennel, etc. So i've not done this yet, they only have the id collars on. My main concern is not losing the dogs away from the house but of someone taking them away, so We have multiple surveillance cameras and padlocks on the gates, but if someone REALLY wanted to get one of the dogs I'm sure they could come on the place with a hooded sweatshirt or ski mask or something, armed with bolt cutters or fence cutters, but
the bottom line, if someone wants to steal your dog, they are GONNA steal your dog, the best you can do is make it such a pain in the butt for them to do it that they look for an easier target, and I think if a thief came beat you to where your dogs were treed and they saw an unmarked dog or a dog with a highly visible freeze brand, they'd choose the unmarked dog because a freeze branded dog they'd either have to keep hidden or keep dying the hair, too much trouble when there are plenty of unmarked dogs to choose from.

I've heard that several different kinds of the microchips are being used and that some vets, etc. don't have a scanner to read all the different ones.

Chips

I don't know if this will help with your presentation but the individual counties in Illinois now have the right to make microchipping all dogs in that county manditory according to a bill recently passed and signed by Illinois govenor. You might get some information on this law from Chris Waller, he usually keeps up on the laws concerning coonhunters in Illinois.
I recently had a dog stolen that we have a DNA sample on file. If I ever find the thief, we will sure find out how much DNA profile is worth in a court of law.

I agree with you totally. I find that when you have people come look at pups for sale I get nervous when they are really looking over the place. I had one incident where someone came and looked at pups then came back at 2:00 in the morning to try to steal one. Dogs barking woke me up and I caught him at gunpoint but I was 21 yrs old at the time and never pressed charges!

The best one I heard yet was a guy had a big fence surrounding all his kennels and let a Rottweiller watchdog running loose inside the main fence!

I don't have any tattoos on my dogs but plenty of pictures.

You would be suprised how many people don't look to see if a dog has a nameplate rivoted to the collar when they find them lost, but will look for the dangling tags connected with an S clamp. Seems that mostly the hunters attach nameplates that way. I just had to get all new tags cause we changed our area code phone number. Also in NY the number on the tags given by the state when you get your Rabies shots can be used to trace a dog. They have a toll free number to call and the Sate can look up the ID number and identify the dog's owner.
