Bloat
Anyone have any problems with this in your dogs?
My son and his buddies took the dogs to the woods to run around. When they got back he let the pup drink a bunch of water all at once. Twenty minutes later she looked like she'd swallowed a soccer ball.
I had some Gas X on hand and gave her a pill, called the vet in a panic and rushed her over there. Thankfully she was fine after an hour or so...was just a lot of air in her belly from gulpin' water real fast.
I know its a quick killer if you don't catch it in time.
Doesn't sound like bloat or gastric distortion. Basically, the stomach flips or distorts and surgery is the only way to save them. Once a dog has this occur they are prone to having it occur again.....even with the stomach sewed to to the lining of the rib cage......I believe this happened with Kansas Jewel.

The stomach flips over itself in bloat. The true term is Gastric Torsion, people began referring to it as "bloat" because one of the long term effects is a bloated look in the stomach cavity. When a dog shows this symptom, it's almost too late to do anything.
Think of the stomach in a dog as being a bag, attached on either end is a garden hose (esophogus on one end, upper colon on the other). The stomach can swing around and loop over the esophogus causing a kink. This kink starves the blood cells of blood and O2 in the lower esophogus and upper stomach. Gas begins to build up in the stomach causing it to inflate (painfully). The best way to avoid this conditions, is to feed small portions twice daily. Also, never excercise a dog right after it's eaten a mean...give it a chance to digest and move from the stomach to the intestines.
Also, certain breeds are much more prone to Gastric Torsion because of their stomach designs...Blood Hounds and Great Danes being the two most common.

Yes i know what bloat is. What happened to the pup could of become bloat had the air not been dealt with. My vet said giving her the Gas X so soon did a world of good. Drinking too fast and gulping air with the water is a precursor to bloat among many other symptoms if its not caught in time.
Hey plott lover
way to go with yhe quick thinking nice you could help them out . Do you work for free? LOL

from what I understand the drinking lots of water (or eating lots of food) BEFORE exercise will lead to "bloat". I've alway been under the impression that coming back from running and drinking a lot of water and then resting is OK. Is this not right?

We lost two females with this years ago. One had a litter of pups we had to finish raising on a bottle.
My dog got the bloat and was of the fortunate to survive $1500 later. Coonhounds are prone to it according to my Vet. I feed my dog in the morning long before I run him or long after I did the night before.
A good practice is feeding twice a day and elevating the food and water bowl. Bloat is an ugly death for a dog. I lost a good Dobe and a real good Black and Tan female to it.
