Need help with a problem
My Autumn female has a boo boo on the right side of her face and I can't get it to heal. She is always rubbing at it with her leg and the dew claw was scratching it open.
It started out as a hemotoma last November. I used a needle and took out a clearish blood tinged fluid. Then she was ok for about a week and I saw her rubbing it with her paw. I then started putting antibotic cream on it and once again it got better. I had gotten it totally healed up til about March and once again she had rubbed it open with her dew claw. So I took surgical tape and taped her dew claw shut so it wouldn't catch on the spot (I replace it every other day). At this time she had about a 1" tear in it. I doctored it with antibotic cream and kept the dew claw taped. Now it is all but heal, cept for a tiny hole in the bottom. Yesterday I got pus out of it, so I cleaned it out and repeated the antibotic cream. Her face is swollon somewhat. I checked her teeth and there doesn't seem to be a problem with them. It doesn't smell bad either, like an infection does at times. She is eating well and actting like nothing is wrong. Today I gave her a shot of Penicillin. 3cc IM.
Now the big question is, will the penicillin hurt the pups she is carrying. She is 5 1/2 wks. along. I know I gave her Penicillin while she was nursing them before, but not while she was pregnant. My vet is out til Friday, I'm trying to get her in on Friday or Saturday.
Any ideas?

Wow, just did some research on Penicillin G and antibiotic cream. I've been using triple antibiotic Bacitracin, Neomycin Sulfate and Polymysin. One of the allergic reactions to it is swelling. Maybe she has developed an allergy to it. I have Povidone Iodine ointment. Maybe I should go back to that, I started using that and switched to the triple stuff.
Also I read that giving Penicillin G is not reccomended for pregnant or lactating females, but no fetal problems have ever been noted in the use of it in those that are.
Ok, so now I just read a report from 2007 that said Penicillin G IS safe for pregnant dogs, cats and people. I'm so confused!!!!

Id stay away from the Penicillin just to be safe.Get ya some EMT gel and try that. Its always worked great for me.
needs to be lanced either a snake has got her or something
is in it healing from inside to out or allergies.
Do you know what caused the boo boo to began with? I'm wordering if there is somthing inside that is causing her to continue to open it up. Sometimes , with anitbiotics, it will began to heal, but will erupt again. Point in case. I had a sliver of pressure treated wood lodged deep into my ring finger. I was on antibiotics, and would appear to be healing, but would then become inflamed and again began to drain. The hospital took x-rays and said there was nothing in my finger. (Wood doesn't always show up on x-rays). Finally, and an MRI later, I had surgery done and three small pieces of wood were removed from my finger. I would have continued to have problems without the surgery. I had a great doctor, who told me he listens to his patients and if I felt that there was somthing in there, that there probably was. The MRI confirmed it, but still only showed one piece of wood. Good luck, hope this helps!
All I know is that one evening I went out to feed and water the dogs and I see this bubble like thind under her right eye on the orbital bone. It has cleared up and then would start up again. She rubs it with her leg and the dew claw catches it and tears it open. Now it is like the top is healed shut, but it is draining from the inside. She goes to the vet on Saturday.

I would have to agee with spudsmom, there is more than likely something stuck under the skin that keeps iritating the pup. thats why she is stilll clawing at it. maybe the vet can find it, good luck.
had the same problem with my female ended up being a quil from mr porky in there
Just a thought
Check her gum line it could be a splinter in the gums or bad tooth or a thorth imbedded under the skin . Hydrogen Peroxid can be used even in the mouth.

I checked her teeth, other then needing a good cleaning (can't find my tooth scaler) they seem fine. Not notable swelling in the gums or gum line. It's like it is healing over on the top, but has an underlying abcess and I can express pus from it. I've cooked it out good with peroxide and been using povodine on it. The swelling has gone down, by as I stated, she goes to the vet tomorrow. I've got to get it healed up, she is due in 3 wks. and I don't want the pups exposed to it.

An elizabethan collar will keep her from messing with it.

I don't have any advice about the rest. But I know with this collar she can not touch it with her feet. Had a dog have eye surgery and this is what they used to keep him from clawing the stitches out of his eyes. I keep several of them on hand in difference sizes just in case.
Good Luck

Took her to the vet this morning and he said it is an abcessed eye tooth. Put her on 250 mg of Amoxicillin 2X a day and said bring her back after she weans the puppies and he will sedate her and pull it. I asked if the infection could go to her brain and her said No. He said she will be fine til she gets the surgery and that the antibiotics might actually clear up the whole infection. In the mean time, I'm to keep doing what I've been doing and keep her dew claw taped so she can't use it to scratch the wound.

this is why i clip or have the vet to remove dew claws might be a good idea incase something like this happens later down the road dew claws arent good for nothing anyway.

What does the standard say about dew claws? I agree, they are a pain in the butt. I use to remove them from my Rotts. but haven't from my coonhounds. Is it allowed and still be able to be shown?

There's something to be said for hot soaks. I use a washcloth wet. I heat it up with very hot tap water or a few seconds in the microwave, and then apply to the area for 3-5 minutes several times a day.
Perhaps she needs an ointment with steroids in it so it heals from the inside out instead of outside in so it clears out whatever might be in there. Panalog is one vets commonly give out in those situations. But your vet will be better able to help you with that.
Anytime I have a stubborn wound or whatever, I use hydrotherapy on it. I use tepid to lukewarm water and the shower massager set on normal and just hose them down for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day.
Sounds like something is in there and it won't heal right until whatever that is works its way out.
Good luck!

Being on the Amoxicillin for just 3 days has improved her face a lot. There is no swelling anymore and there is no more pus, just a small opening. She isn't scatching at it anymore either. Now I'm just praying for a healthy litter w/o any rpoblems in delivery and raising.
