Perry,
Good post. Did you ever hunt with Michigan Blue Rebel? I never realized how much of an impact he had on the breed until I looked over some old Blue Books. I know there are a few(well maybe one) on here that will say it is attributed to Hammer II. But Michigan Blue Rebel had a hand in most of the ones you listed
(I think). I know that a good many of those on there go back to him and in turn Hammer II.

Perry

As you know I hunted with old Mash all his life. from the time that dog was 11 months old til the fall before he died. I saw him look good..bad ...and Super. HE could wind a coon as well as figure out an old track. Maybe not the fastest track dog but he didnt make many looses. I measure all the dogs I own or even hunt with agasint the memories of the old Mash dog. When I got started I hunted with Mash and LArry in all the competition hunts so I hunted against some of the other dogs on the list. Hunted with Denny Kirby and posie a couple times. I think it was a 50-50 deal in the hunts once Mash won and one night she did but I cant be sure. You and I hunted against each other with Luke and pleasure hunted one other night with him, or it might have been toad I dont remember that either. Maybe you do,,,cold early spring night down on Larry's brother in laws place. Anyway, Mash is the one I hunted with the most. Almost 13 yrs if I remember right. He ended up having a stroke and Larry kept him alive letting him live in the house and carrying him in and out. He passed on opening night of coon season in 1994 I think it was. Larry laid him to rest the next day and that night we hunted near his grave. That old dog taught a pretty green kid what coon hunting was all about, and I am glad to say I got to be a part of it.

Oldies but Goodies

I hunted with offspring of Hammer II and Warson's Trapper.. They were the real deal..... Saw Junkyard Blue David, didn't get to hunt with him... Knew Torrence Wilkenson..... That hunt you had in the mountains of Pa.. Was that National Bluetick days in 1986 ??? I was there and had a great time.... Remember talking at great lenth with Dave Dean there and seeing Hammer 9 and 10... Also met Warren Haslour I believe in 82 or 83 when he had Combs Jack at stud... Hunted with Buddy Jordan's Tree Banging Rivit [remember Buddy?] Been enjoying blues for over 30 yrs. and its been a great ride..........

Add HAMMER V to the list. I don't know how he hunted, but he could sure throw some nice pups. And speaking of his offspring, add BELL CREEK BLUE BUCK to the list too. My uncle owned a nice dog out of Buck and I'd like to hear how he hunted.

Natural Blue Willy

Natural Blue Willy wasn't widely known but one of the best coondogs that ever treed a coon. I started hunting Willy in the hunts at 13 months old 22 hundred points later, three hunts, and 9 days he was a night champion. I sold Willy to Curt Harrington who was a great person and hunter. Curt , if still living would have many memorable stories. Curt had told me during that first coon season he had kept track of Willy's score against the elements. When hunting Willy alone he had failed to finish 4 tracks out of 102 that he had struck. For those who wonder what it takes to be a coondog. Start keeping track of strikes and finished tracks. If you have something that is 80% you are toting a fine hound. Curt told me one time he took Willy to Idaho on a dig game hunt just to tree a few coon out west. Willy treed 9 singles up 1/2 mile of a small stream. You will see Willy in a few pedigrees today. Willy was from a cross of Quail Creek Jimmy and Natural Blue Belle. I understood that Willy died with his boots on, treed on a ringtail. They get better after their gone but memories are just memories.

Bobcat,I've got one called Trick she is my last one out of Jinx just turned 3 last month, leading the PKC state race in Ohio. Still have Shiver she's 7 but I don't get to hunt her much anymore, too busy training.

Also have two 8mo old females off Shiver and Troy Ferrari's Wild Style that have my mouth watering. Troy's got one out of that litter that he has been hunting alone for the past week or so treeing coon every time out and the other two male pups from the litter are running and treeing consistently. Mine will have to sit in the pen until the state race is over before I can really get serious with them. Can't seem to draw a bow tag since they changed to over the phone system its tougher. I might and come out before it get's too bad just to coon hunt, but then I'd start seeing slob bucks running around and go into withdrawal LOL. Are you going to AO if so let me know, I'll be down the road in North Vernon but I might drive up to visit.

How about Oak Hill Mindy and Coon Creek Sadie of Wes Blue's.
Not that far back but will do. Met Curt harrington once along with his grandson Zane. His trophy room is one of a kind. He has Willy and 3 other of his best dogs stuffed treeeing on a full tree inside the room. That room is amazing.

When I was a kid we went to Michigan on vacation and stopped at Terry Warresons. What I remember was how well trained Trapper was. He was a house dog and could do tricks. Iremember Mr. Warreson putting a cookie on Trappers nose and he just sat there until he was told to eat it. He had the obedience of a border collie. my dad always said he was a whale of a coon dog too.

Just wondering, anybody on here ever hunt with Utchmans Hawk??

Posted by calblu on 08-21-2004 01:38 AM:

Hammer X

Anyone ever gone to the woods with Hammer X and can say how he hunted and what his mouth was like? My husband had a few Hammer X sons and grandsons when I met him and they were above average as both coon and bear dogs out here. They also did pretty good in water races and bench shows. We don't have anything now that shows him closer than the 5th or 6th generation.
I started out hunting around blues out of IV and V and they didn't seem to be quite as versatile as X was (I have no idea what the call names on these dogs were).

Did Kirby get anything good out of his old female Ivory? What is Denny hunting as of late?
Perry, I know exactly where that is! I lived on the other side of the tracks north of town. I have alot of family in that area. Nauman's, McDermott's, Kluesner's.................

speaking of old coon mags

I've got a ton of old American cooner mags from the the early 80s through mid 90s. I've also got some old Full cry, Prohound, and Coon hound blood lines mags too. Lots of good info and pics of the dogs we only hear about in pedigrees and discussions like this. WAYNE V., I even saw an old ad that you ran in one of those mags.
