Who's Land?

I was just curious as to how many coon hunters on here own the land they hunt on, or hunt on land owned by others. I personally hunt on land owned by others but, it seems that less and less land owners are willing to let others hunt on their land. I have always heard that land owners "up north" were more open to letting hunters on their land and just wonder if there's any truth to it. Who's land do you hunt and how are the land owners where you live? -Billy

It depends on who you are more than anything!! I got keys to gates that nobody else has and can't get!! I hunt on other people's land and I'm in 4 different hunting clubs. 2 of the clubs almost join with my land which is nice !! If you got a good reputation for taking care of people's land the owners are more apt to let you hunt.

Around these parts those that don't care vastly outnumber those that do but I expect that to change as years go by. Around here, it isn't so much about getting permission, it is more that the timber continues to disappear.

We do both. We own/live on 120 acres of timber, creeks, and a few meadows (great coonhunting) amongst several dairy farms that we hunt. Plenty of corn, timber, creeks and hollers to hunt. WE have not had much trouble getting permission to hunt land....Just got to go ask in a very polite and business like manner and if ya get turned down, ya get turned down. I always try to treat the land with respect as well as the landowners wishes - no littering and try not to mess with the cows lol ....

I live on a 160 acre pecan grove and we have 80 acres leased that joins the pecan grove. It has 3 lakes and a couple of creeks and 900 pecan trees. I do most of my hunting in the Sam Houston national forest. I think its 160,000 acres but most of it is pines. You don’t hunt private land in Texas very long without permission or you will find your self in jail.

Here where I hunt, 20 say yes and 1 no. Alot of land owners want you to hunt to thin out the coon. Its letting me hunt are letting the coon destroy acres of corn. LOL

in south carolina 20 say no 1 says maybe you guys up north are lucky we join clubs down here no coon hunting during deer or turkey season our deer hunting is from sept to jan. and turkey season the whole month of april so if you are poor and dont own land you are S.O.L. not much W.M.A. EITHER.

My dad owns 400 acres of timber and crop land, rents another 1600 acres of timber and crop land. We hunt mostly his ground, but do have a few other places we go. The timber totals about 400 acres and has corn and soybean fields all around, plus a couple of nice strip mine lake totaling about 13 acres of water. Its a pretty nice place to hunt, plus its mostly all with in walking distance of the house

We own a few acres. Mostly just fields that we rent out to a farmer. We do have some woods, but along with it comes crazy "neighbors" and I wouldn't put it past them to harm any of ours dogs, so I try not to cut the dogs loose back here much at all.
So its mostly just other peoples property.

My family owns 220ac I live on..I can hunt a young pup on it but thats about it..While 220 ac sounds like ALOT to yall northern folk..That aint crap down here..I'm in 6 different deer clubs mainly to coon hunt.Then when the season gets here.We hit state WMA land..We have hundreds of thousands of ac of that..I'm not blessed at all with good hunting..MAYBE one day I'll move somewhere that has coon!

I own 2 acres.......have one farm that is approx 600 acres that I have free rein on. They called 15 years ago and asked if I would help with coon in their sweet corn patch. Unwillingly () I went out and helped them out. Now, I try to go out and work appprox 3 or four days a year plus help them thin their deer! Lots of state game lands and several other farms that have given me permission over the years to hunt.

I don't have no hunting land that I can call my own but I do have permission to hunt some great places and just got the keys to more spots,I just go up to them and ask"Hey you heard about that rabies spread around here and you don't want them critters near your grand young ones do ya"?That usually breaks the ice lol or I have just called the name on the NO HUNTING signs and just ask,but my thing is I don't let them get near houses or if they do I'm getting to them fast as I can to get them shut up,I don't even shine those trees and I treat the land as if it was mine,always lock the gate,if its rusty take a couple cans of paint and run over it,no spinning tires making ruts everywhere,pick up all the honeybun wrappers that fall put when I open the doors,keep the trails free from falling limbs and stuff believe me they notice this stuff and it goes over well with them.I have keys to land that coonhunters in my area been trying to get for years and they wonder how I got the keys anf when I do let them hunt with me I makem behave or leave...........Tree My Dog!!!

One woods I hunt, I can drive back into the woods 1 mile instead of walking. And he has some trail cut out through out the woods that my s-10 fits on LOL. Its my drive through hunting spot. Kind of nice once in a while. When the dogs get treed, I can drive with in blocks of them. LOL Last night the farmers wife asked me if I could drop the dogs out side her kitchen window. LOL What I said. Well she has a bird feeder and they come and tear them down most every night. I assured her I would one night this week. Have to keep her happy, because she thinks when I hunt there that Im thinning them out. LOL Nope just having fun, but during the fall I harvest a few. Lot of coon there, but the worst thing about it is the bluffs.

I own 9 acres on a two lane black top county road with no stop signs or traffic lights for 5 miles just a 1/4 mile away from a two lane state highway. Nope, I don't run dogs on it. We do hunt it for other critters.

I hunt mostly state land. This year though I am setting my sights north and going to try to get permission in some prime northern farms.

i have 5 acres and a bluedog. we hunt on other folks places and on one lease place we have.

Around here there is a lot of land that is owned by families that have moved off to other states. Due to Kentucky's laws about how land is controlled after it has been left to heirs it is hard for the owners to do anything with it. It is mostly hillsides and small hollers and if it doesn't have enough coal to be mined they just sell the timber off of it and let it be. The hunters around here hunt places like that all the time. It can be some rough hunting, due to the logging and thin coon population because of the hunting pressure, but its land to hunt. I have some other spots that I have gotten permission to hunt but I never kill a coon off of them so I can hunt my young dogs. I also hunt a large tract of WMA land that is closeby.

I have 257 acres that about 30% of it is wooded. Then 9000 acres of goverment timber that joins mine that I can hunt year round. plus another 65000 acre WMA that I can hunt 8 months a year (all this joins one another) and I can hunt most all the farm land in my area. I know Im, lucky. Ricky
