Todds question brings up another question.

Is judgeing a volunteer thing or is it mandatory if asked? If the club puts me in the card to judge, do I have the right to decline? Should I have the right to decline?

I have seen clubs and breed day events that advertised if you live within so many miles of the club you will guide if asked or be refused entry. Could this also be applied to judges?

.....I don't think it should be............I get handed that darn card everywhere.........RQE's, Zones, Winter Classic, Autumn Oaks................really don't mind doin' it, except for the fact that I don't have bi-focals, and have to look over my glasses every time to write stuff down......it's a pain in the hind parts when somebody with good vision could do it much more easily...........just sayin'..........

I'm pretty sure if it's agreed upon by the cast, there can be a designated score keeper for the judge...

Jim,

I surely wouldn't want you to feel picked on, but I would have to ask you and Elvis every time.

You two surely do know the rules as well if not better than most.

As for your question, while it would make my job easier, I would feel uneasy about making it a requirement.

But is it a requirement?
Rule 10 states "Judges are picked by sponsors....." No mention of any option to decline.

Larry
Ive judged litteraly hundreds of casts since my first one in 1975. I left my dog in the box many times and judged when there werent enough nite ch. judges.Im not alone, so have many others. I dont want to do it anymore.
I guess I feel ive paid my dues, let some of these young bucks pay theirs.

Jim,

I have had guys take the card and get outside and hand it away.

I think if UKC tried or asked us to enforce those keeping the card we would just see more of the above behavior.

Many individuals take this competition hunting too serious and they do not want any distractions from them winning.

Jim's Question to Todd's Question Brings Up Another Question????

What if I go to a hunt and draw Jim (or Elvis for that matter), do I have the right to request a different judge or am I stuck?

i don't know if the sponsor can make a guy do it or not.

i have judged several cast, i don't mind doing it if they need me to. its a pain in the ars but when i carry the card i know the judge knows the rules.

I'm not trying to let them off easy but I don't think you should force someone to guide or judge. I might try to shame them into it or maybe go another direction and play on their ego but if they refuse, I don't think you should scratch them or refuse entry to future events or anything like that.

And if you disagree with me as a club I might not be able to prevent you from refusing their entry. The right to refuse entry is pretty wide open the way it's worded. I believe that's how the big events that JiM is referring to pull it off is with the right to refuse entry rule. I'm not sure I agree with it...but it is there.

i tied to weasel outta the job this spring, because

i have been in so few hunts the last 4 yrs er so, and knew that other guys on the cast were more upto date on the card,, i ended up doing it nyway and must have done alright cuz i ddint win!! and last sat. noone did!

Posted by jculler8 on 05-14-2009 01:24 AM:

I'm not quite sure if it is a requirement to do so if asked, but I tend to look at it as an obligation and a responsibility if handed the card...

I could see where they could possibly try and force someone to judge, but as far as quiding goes I dont see how they could do that. You have no idea what a person's hunting is like and if they dont feel they have what is needed to guide then thats that. As far as judging, if you are in a hunt you should know the rules good enough to judge anyways!
