Go 2 the drug store and get a bottle of benadryl tablets. Give 1 tonight and 1 in the morning. If it was hit in the face...take 2 a vet. Good luck.

Tim,

Is the dog not worth the $$ to take to the vet tonight? I know emergency/weekend fees are expensive but if its a dog that you care about saving wouldn't it be worth the time/$$ rather than try to treat it yourself?

Copperhead bite

We've had dogs bitten before while hog hunting. We would always give the dogs something with a high fat content like pure
butter. The thinking behind that was the fat in the butter would absorb the poison. Never lost one but I guess there's always an exception. The benadryl sounds like a good idea. It will slow the heart down and keep the dog calm. I've never seen one die from a copperhead bite. Start worrying though if one gets bitten by a
rattle snake. Good luck!

Snake BITES

My Grandfather used to take the top of an onion. And then take and put the onion top and the bite wound. He would wrap with gauze to hold it in place. It seem to work.It has something to do with the drawing out effect of the onion. It may sound far fetched but it worked.

I completely understand - just had to ask. I assume this is not one of your best dogs. Anyway, if you decide to go to the vet with him I am sure you will find a way to come up with the $$. The Lord has a way of taking care of things. If Shawn and I can help in any way let us know. Would rather help than see you loose a good Redbone!! Lord only knows real good ones are hard to come by! And I know you got a few!! Keep us posted!

soak in gas and squeeze it

stick his foot in some kerosene and go to bed, I've dealt with it before. If he ain't dead by the time you get home from the woods to the house, he'll be alright. It'll look bad for about a week, if you don't anything. He'll be ready to go in about a week. Moccasins bites to a dog is like a bee sting to us. Benedryl will keep it from itching and make him sleepy.

Tim,
I have had several of mine get bit by cottonmouths. Give him 3 CCs of Penicillin again in the morning and every 12 hours for three days, along with more benadryl. His foot may bust open and it may not. If it does'nt he should be ready to hunt again in a few days. If it busts open try to keep it as clean as you can and keep giving the penicillin longer to fight infection.
Sorry to read that he got bit, but he should be OK in a few days.
I have never lost one that got bit on the foot.
One thing to get for the future is a bottle of Dexamethasone. It is really good for the swelling if given immediately after they get bit. I keep a bottle of it in my truck along with some syringes.
Good luck.

...

Try Diesel fuel or Icthammol 20 % salve.... that will draw out the venom

just went out and checked on him . if it wasnt for the swelling and a little limp you wouldnt even know he got bit . thanks everyone .

Posted by recon on 05-02-2009 03:13 PM:

benadryl is for the swelling. take his collar off of him so that if his head and neck swells it wont suffocate him. penicillan is for the infection. keep the would clean too with peroxide.

I used to have a Catahoula cur - about 90#. He got bit by cottonmouths at least twice a year his whole life. Always in the head. Head swelled up like a balloon and oozed pus. We never really did anything about it but give him a little benadryl. Few days and he was fine.

when I was a kid, my dog got bit by a cottonmouth, and my dad soaked a rag in keroscene and wrapped dogs paw with it. Dog lived to a good old age.

The hound will survive, just let him rest in the shade, keep water near him, he may lay around for a day or two, but he will be alright.
I have taken a Snake bit Hound to the Vet before, and there is not much they can do.
Just dont get your hound excited, let him rest.

A guy on southern dog hunters board told me that he gave his dogs some kinda shot he buys at the local feed store that supposed to be like a imunization against snake bites. He was supposed to tell me what the name of it is but he never did.

2cc of Dex given pretty soon after they are bit keeps the swelling to a minimum

I keep 2 cc drawn up in the glove box of my truck for snake bites
