-- Algae in Water Buckets... (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=273380)

Algae in Water Buckets...

I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS SOMETHING WE CAN DO TO KEEP THE ALGAE OUT OF THE BUCKETS.

WE CHANGE AND PUT FRESH WATER IN DAILY.

IN THE SUMMER WHEN IT'S HOT WE CLEAN THE BUCKETS EVERY OTHER DAY AND ABOUT ONCE A WEEK WE PUT JUST A FEW DROPS OF CLOROX IN EACH BUCKET. THAT SEEMS TO HELP, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE NOTHING DOES WHEN IT IS REALLY REALLY HOT.

WE HAVE THE REGULAR PLASTIC WHITE BUCKETS, I WONDER IF METAL BUCKETS GROW AS BAD.

WE HAVE A FEMALE THAT IS FIXING TO DROP PUPS AND WE ARE NOT SURE ABOUT PUTTING THE CLOROX IN HER BUCKET, AND ALSO ABOUT PUPPIES. WE WILL CLEAN IT THAT IS NO BIG DEAL, JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD ANY IDEAS OR FOUND ANY SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TO IT.

IT SEEMS LIKE SINCE IT'S BEEN HOT THE LAST WEEK IN SUSIE'S BUCKET IT GREENS DAILY.

Christy,

I clean them about every 2 weeks with a little clorox water and it seems to keep it killed down - I just make sure they are good and dry before I put them back in the kennel with water.

I was told to put a small coil of copper in the bottom of the water bucket. Never tried it but it may work.

WILL ALGEA DIE WITHOUT WATER? OR WILL IT COME BACK EVEN AFTER YOU CLEAN THE BUCKET REALLY GOOD?

MAYBE WE SHOULD GET SOME MORE BUCKETS, AND SWITCH THEM OUT EVERY OTHER DAY?

Get some dishwashing liquid that is anti-bacterial, I wash mine out about once every week or so with the dishwashing liquid and a brush and I never have any problems.

I don't know if it is an old wive's tale or not, but I have been told if you put copper in a horse's water tank it will suppress mares from coming into heat. If it is true I wonder if it would do that to dogs?

We use black horse salt lick holders as feed and water buckets - They work great hard to turn over and it does not get it real bad and when I clean them it stays away for a while - we have none at all in cooler times. Most of the times I can just wipe them out really good and they are good for a while - I do the clorox every 2-3weeks during the summer.

I put a small amount of bleach in my water buckets. I have well water. I have done this for years & never get algee in my water buckets.

I use a windex type bottle and spray a couple sprays in before I fill it.

My buddy that has city water dont have a problem. He thinks its because of the clorine added to city water.

This really works.

When I was young I had a little mutt female at the house. An old bird hunter told my dad to put a piece of copper in her water bucket to keep her from coming in heat. Dad took his advice and that little female never came in.

A glunk of bleach in the water bucket will stop your problem and won't huet the dog.

Best thing I've found for this is County Water....lol

naah seriously the clorox seems to work best..could try stainless pails...the algae may grow but it rinses out easier b/c it can't stick

one cap full per 3 gallon water will keep it down and still safe for your broody gyps , any more is not sugested , but a little goes a long way

Get some galvanized buckets. It will not grow in them, been using galvanized buckets for about 10 yrs. Tried stainless, but algea grew in them in less than a week.

Posted by Plottluvr on 04-29-2009 04:46 AM:

I use the black rubber buckets and haven't had a problem.

When I used the plastic horse buckets I scrubbed them out every day and had no algae build up. Never used bleach..just water and a scrub brush.

Posted by Sandi on 04-29-2009 12:30 PM:

.

I agree with plottluvr. I have had both city and well water and algae grew no matter what. The smooth plastick dark buckets still get algae, maybe not as much and you dont see it as much. I have found the black rubber horse buckets do work best for the algae problem. This is all I have ever used.

Cristy I use blk rubber buckets and I clean them every day by using a toilet brush and water .. That seems to take care of any algae build up..Works for me good luck.

I use the black rubber bowls during the winter, galvanized buckets during the warm months. I dump them out every evening and fill with fresh water. Every weekend I clean them with bleach. They stay clean this way.

Black buckets seem to work best for us...We have all colors and types of buckets, but the black buckets seem to not grow algea in them as fast as the lighter ones..Even changing and rincing everyday does not help with the lighter ones..We have to scrub on those daily.

We have always used a tiny bit a bleach in all of the farm animals water containers...Chickens, horses, goats, ect. and never had a problem. We used to use it in the dogs water, but quit when the kids took the watering chores over. Didn't want to trust them with the bleach and it gave them something extra to do scrubbing the buckets...LOL...
