Colorado Bear Hunt

What was the original reason or cause of the proabition of dogging blackies in CO. has there ever been any talk of trying to get the div. of wildlife to look into a spring hunt? Just thought it might have been because of the still hunting conflicts of the other big game hunts.

The reason for not being able to hunt bear with hounds is. It was put on the ballet by antis as a change to the colorado constitution. It had nothing to do with dow. It came down to the anti groups running ads on tv and radio with all there money. While the hunters sat by and let it happen. Mostly because not having faced anything like this no knew what to do. now that it is a constitutional change not much we can do about it. A few years ago we tried to get dow to give us a persuit season, since the new law states you cannot TAKE a bear with the use of dogs. The option to run and not take is left open. The dow had trouble understanding this option and wouldn't give it any consideration.
This is a lesson to all hunters to be prepared and ready to band together to gather funds to fight any new anti hunting law.

How true that is

Pursuit season

What is the method in which you guys get to voice opinions to the DOW. Here in NC we have (public hearings) annually during which you may plead your case or simply voice your own opinions. Also it is a time in which you can submit proposals to the NCWRC for consideration. Has the Colorado Houndsmen Association had anyone lobbying for a pursuit only season? It looks like there should be enough interest in it for them to see a potential revenue for the DOW. Im not sure of the nonresident fees for pursuit only seasons in surrounding states like Utah but each year I travel to Wisconsin in July, and I am glad to pay $110.00 to get to run my dogs in their training season. Maybe if hunter requests alone would not open their eyes the money might.

When we tried it we went to an open meeting with dow comissioners. We had a bunch of houndsmen show up. They weren't interested in it at all, in fact they wouldn't really even listen to what we had to say. We probably should try again from the money angle. That would sure be a lot of additional money for them. I'll bring it up to other houndsmen and a couple of dow field officers I know next time I see them. I don't think anything will come of this, because even if dow does go for it it would have to go through the state congress, but we'll see.

pursuit season

Colorado houndsman should at least try,all they can say is no again. If you guys get something started up and need some help with it , like showing dow how much nonresident interest there is in your proposal. I personally know of quite a few houndsmen who would be willing to pay any resonable amount to get more opportunities. You might be able to sell the idea to the dow, that they could gain revenue for their budget without raising the costs of their other big game tags, or hunting permit fees. Does the dow have trouble with nuisance bears in the spring? Maybe a spring pursuit season could be another attempt at curbing that problem for them. Just some thoughts I had, best of luck to you guys, I know it must be terrible to have such crazy regulations in such a beautiful and game rich state.

Gents,
Let me know if you decide to pursue this again. I'd be glad to help. Otherwise, my money is going to go out of state again this year like everyone else's. The worst they can say is no. Right now they probably think there isn't much interest anyway.
