Just bad luck

I have been hunting this real nice 9 month old plott female. Last night she goes in and gets treed on a big old den. She is jumping on the tree a little and gets caught right in the bum hole by a broke off branch of a tree next to the tree she is treed on.

The dog was obviously in pain and had some blood and stool on her from the wound. I was really at a loss as to what the heck to do? I am hoping she is better today and can overlook that unfortunate incident.

Any suggestions??

Ron

Lay her up for several days.. Feed her food wet and soaked in, I would feed her less than usual so she "goes" less to allow it to heal.. What is it with you and bad luck and crazy things happening in the woods ????????????????????

Yeah, I'd get her to vet asap...dont want to wait on that type of injury. As for the future, I'm sure she wnt associate that with treeing..she'll forget all about it.

OUCH!

Can't offer any help but to say I'd have a vet check. Just dealing with butt issues on one of our dogs and you don't want to deal with infections there on a female especially...
Being a coonhound...and one who is turning out so nicely I'd bet she will not be effected by it...but that's a wild guess on my part.
Hope she heals up just fine.... Heather

LOL...

...well this got "interesting" didn't it? LOL...

You should have seen what the vet and I did to Poor Bob last night when he took my bluedawg to the vet for his anal gland infection... LOL... I have known my vets for 21 or 22 yrs and they're all women(and girls)... like me .... Anyway I told them Wyatt needed to come back with a rear end issue and the phonecall got pretty silly... Then we set up Bob for the visit. He would walk in with Wyatt... once they cleared the building for him... his voice scares all the little animals and people... He actually already horrified everyone in the parking lot... so Bob was already embarassed... He goes into the exam room and... lol... my friend Nicole the hot looking tech said Bob we'll have to check you too.. see if it runs in the family!

He was the BUTT of a few jokes....

Seriously... hope that dog heals up and you never deal with such an ODD injury again...

Visibly the dog looks fine, but it sure isn't the same dog I took out of the kennel two nights ago. I am hoping she heals up mentally as I hope she did physically, she was really starting out nice.

Just give her time, for every incident like this that you actually watch, 10 more happen while their out there hunting. She'll get over it. Are you sure everything is ok up in there? A splinter in the anal cavity can get terribly infected.

physically I can detect no problem, but mentally she is messed up. What was an incredibly outgoing bold pup is now a shy scared dog. It is sad to see, but I will give her some time. Thanks for asking. Ron

Same thing happened to Hardwood Dan , Paul Shepfields Purina dog years ago. Thought he was ok and then took a turn for the worst. He had some pieces broke off up in there.

Posted by mjflores on 04-07-2009 06:21 PM:

I would really get the dog checked out...they'll need to go in with a scope to see if there's any foreign matter embedded in the mucus lining. It'll be easy to remove now, rather than fight a bad infection or worse a fistula later.

LOL.... Hello from Bob and from me! Thank goodness Bob is a FANTASTIC guy! Pretty sure AO wont be in the cards... schools changed schedule to BEFORE Labor day here! Akkk! We are TRYING to find a way to go...we'll see.... IF so we WILL love to see you again!!! Heather

Briar, Your dog is still a pup... I bet with a break, if she is fine physically she will get over the shyness. Pain makes them awful shy...and esp. on their rear end. most Attacks will happen on a dog from the back... so it's scary and hurts. Sure hope she'll be fine. I could tell you really felt this pup has a ton of promise. Have faith, stay positive and give her lots of good attention...

HappyHunting Heather

The dog is doing better daily. She still has about 5 days left of anti-biotics and I am still soaking her food. I am going to get her out of the kennel for a while tonight just to get her back out and moving. The wound was inside the cavity so unless we wanted to turn the dog inside out to fix it there was really nothing else we could do. The anti-biotics were potent and that helped avoid any infection....hopefully.

I went out this morning and she seems to be getting along fine. No more blood in the stool. She is still a little timid but all in all ready to probably start again. Thanks for asking, Ron

Nate:

We went to the vet last Tuesday and they shaved around the wound and I took home a pile of medicine. The wound was not in the anus but right beside it. She had about a 1/2 inch diameter hole in her. She is not totally healed but I think she is okay since last night when I took her to the truck she loaded OVER the tailgate and this is not a big dog.

We are hunting again.....and she seems no worse for the wear. Thanks for checking in buddy, Ron
