garmin and the leaves
I know the garmin astro has been discussed many times but i still had a question.Has any one used one with the leaves on?My hand held garmin and my megellan 210 neither one will work in a woods with the leaves on.
Wondering the same thing! I work with exspensive Trimble brand gps units at work and if i get under trees or close to buildings, etc. I lose signal or coordinates are very, very inaccurate. How can a $30,000 system lose signal and accuracey in these conditions and a $600 unit not? Better radio frequencies? The base still has to pick up the satellites?
I hunted all last summer with my Garmin and never had the first bit of trouble with picking up satellite signal. I can turn mine on in the house and it will pick up signal in no time. I have never lost satellite signal while hunting and I have probably hunted around 200 nights since I got mine.

Yeah they go through the batteries especially if you use the light. I bought 4 nicd rechargeables and just changed them out every night or 2 and keep the other set on charge.

Well the etrex and 210 are absolutely not good comparisons.
For one my 215 is much, much better at keeping a signal and is still not nearly as good as my brothers old Lowrance Global Nav (old, took 6 batteries, but POWERFUL).
I too have been worried about the leaves simply because even though the better ones were much improved over the cheaper ones, even the best ones lost signal in an ivy thicket in the gulf.
But I have been assured by several people that I know that the leaves will have very little effect. They have been right about everything else about them.

How many satalites does astro use?I think one of my hand helds uses 3 and the other uses 5.I also read on another post that they did not work well when next to a building.I guess the jury is still out about working in the leaves, looks like one guy says they don't work and 2 say it does.I reckon i will wait awhile before i get one.
I don`t know about leaves yet but I can tell you I`ve used mine in heavy cedars with a solid canopy overhead. Worked great and never lost signal, those cedars are denser than any maple leaves and my Garmin 76 will loose signal but my Astro doesn`t.

can you use the astro like a reg gps as well. with way points and such?
Yes the Astro is a full featured GPS when not being used to track dogs. The map is the only way I track my dogs, I never use the dog tracker page, I just look and see where there at on the map. I am not sure on the number of waypoints and tracks it will store but it is a lot. I have tons of logging roads and four wheeler roads stored on mine as well as my feeders, salt licks for deer, treestands, all the trees my dog makes, as well as some brushpiles and structure marked over at the lake for fishing.
The Astro needs to lock on to 4 satellites to work properly but mine usually stays locked on to 6 or 7 while I am hunting.
