lions that weigh over 200 lbs?
I was wondering how many hunters on here have treed lions that go over 200 lbs. I here reports all the time of cats going over 200, one recently that was 230 lbs. I haven't caught a ton of cats, but Iv'e caught my share, and hunted with a few guys that have caught a ton. The biggest Iv'e seen was just under 180 and was 3/8 of an inch off making the all time B and C . I have seen toms that weigh 165 make the book. So this isn't about skull size only weight. I have my opinions on this, but I wanted to see what other guys thought. This is about actual weight not a guess.
Got to love the good old guess-o-meter never lets a guy down.lol

My uncle shot one
In B.C. that was 217 lbs. i forgot the scull measurement but it was # 17 in pope and young for along time ( he shot it with a bow) He said he turned down 4 other toms to get that one. Is there a way to look up pope and young records?

200 lb. lions
The biggest we have personally seen killed was 188 lbs. That was on an empty stomach. He had just killed an elk, but did not get the pleasure of eating a bite, when the hounds were up his tailpipe.
We have a friend that personally killed a tom that weighed 205, with nothing in his belly. Was very old, probably would not have made it through the winter. This same friend has treed multiple lions and only 1 or 2 others have gone over 200 lb. He, being the houndman and not the shooter, has taken several in the 180-195 lb range. That was in the 80's and 90's.
A cat that the fish & game killed around 3 years ago a ways to the east of us weighed 210, but doubt if it had an empty belly.
Most of the good cats taken, in our experience, are in the 150-170 lb. range. We have had a lion in the tree different times, but did not get to kill him, that "just guessing" would have been in the 170-180 lb. range.

How much do you figure in weight is the difference between a full stomach and an empty one?
I figure a lion will eat 10 to 15 lbs, some times more. Since Iv'e never weighed one before and after that's just a guess based on how much is eaten on a fresh kill. I could be way off though.
Brian you can't beat the guess O meter, it has never been wrong!
Grub.
LMAO.. Never proven wrong... The wonderful thing about the guess-o-meter is that by the time anyone want's too question it the evidence is gone. Brian and I have been useing A good quality scale for the last three or four years. Mostly for our own curiosity. And after A while it turned too more of A reality check. We have A history of taking better then average cats, But we have not taken A 200lb cat on the scale yet. Closest we have come is 183lbs. And that lion was 15 and 2/16 final Boone and Crockett. Not the highest scoring lion we have ever taken but A monster in anyone's books. We took two cats season before this one that went 15 and 8/16. They never cracked 180lbs. Have only personally known of one cat that went 204lbs. Wasn't my lion but loaned A dog back too one of the men that got me started in this madness. His daughter took the cat and it was off A kill. My personal opinion is that A full cat is good for 10-15lbs. Twenty would be A stretch but I guess wouldn't consider it as impossible. Wouldn't expect it if the kill is somewhere that the cat is not feeling pressured. My personal belief is that A 150 plus pound tom is A mature cat. Although we have taken cats lighter then that and stilled scored over 15". So for the most part if someone is claiming too 200lb. Cats on A consistent basis then let me know where they are at. I wanna put one on A scale.......
