5 way at 6 and 9 weeks,7 way at 12 and 16 weeks.

Posted by Plottluvr on 03-26-2009 02:54 PM:

i give the 5 way...Vet said unless there is a threat of Lepto in the area it shouldn't be given to young pups because it can kill them.

Posted by lockednks on 03-26-2009 03:40 PM:

7 way

I know there is a lot of talk especially over at Gun Dogs.com about 7 way being unnecessary for a dog of any age unless there is a direct threat of Lepto.

Posted by TREMOR on 03-26-2009 03:51 PM:

7 way

You for sure should not give a pup under 9 weeks a 7 way...it COULD kill them..

I have always givin 7 way at 6 weeks and 8 weeks, 8 way at 10-12 weeks. Never lost a pup and never had one returned for being sick. Just me though.

I get the 8 in 1 from my vet. I give it to them at 6 weeks old, 9 weeks old, 12 weeks old, and then they go to the vet at 15 weeks old for final shot, rabies, and bordettela. I haven't lost one from giving them their shots yet, and this is just excatly how my vet gives them their shots. I just buy the first 3 rounds to save the office visit each time.

The vacine for Lepto can damage the liver in a pup that is too young. Yes, you may be lucky and get away with it for 10-20 years, but if you know anything about toxicology you would not.

The point I am trying to make is why gamble? Why take a chance with a pup that you are excited about?

Arlo64, these guy's are not going to answer your question. all they want to do Is tell you what not to use. I don't know what to tell you, I use what Hobo told me to use and have been very happy with them.

Give

them Sub-Q

under the skin. Normally, I get loose skin from the back-side of the pup. You don't want to get deep. Lots of little "stuff" in there that they need to survive with!
Good luck!
(Whatever shot you decide on.)

Wayne, I sent Arlo an e-mail and told him exactly what Hobo told
me. and thats what Vet/Vax says, so thats good enough for me.

But Wayne, I did'nt start telling him what not to use. Oh yes sorry about the post Lonnie posted, good Information. Thanks Larry for bringing Lonnie post to my attention.

I'd say I told him that I give my pups a 7way shot when I take them off the female, then another one in 3 weeks and if I still have them thats followed up with a third shot in about a month.

But I could be wrong.

OK...First off I am not saying what to do or not to do..What is right or what is wrong...But this is what happened to us on our last litter...

I gave a 5 way at 6 weeks...Then I gave a 7way just days before 8 weeks...My puppies heads swelled up like English Bulldogs !! Thier eyes were swollen shut. They were so swollen that there was no contour from thier chin to thier chest...They also broke out in hives all over thier bodies...I rushed the worst ones to the vet and he gave them a shot and told me to dose up the others with benedryl when I got home..He said that is was an alergic reaction to the lepto...He said that it could have just been the brand, but more than likely the lepto itself...When I say the worst ones, I mean the ones that were having a hard time breathing.

The next shot I gave was another 5 way...Then the last vaccine I tried the 7way again, but a different brand...Still got a bad allergic reaction...So, from now on, we will always give the 5way vaccines on schedule until the pups leave us. We will inform the new owner that the pup has not had a lepto and we would advise getting it under veternary care...

Good luck in what ever you choose to do..

Sabrina Smith
