What do you expect out of a guide?

I was just wondering of what everyone expects out of a guide on a comp hunt? I have recently been asked to guide a big competition hunt…and never been on this side of the fence before. I want to know what is expected of me. Thanks

TO TAKE THE CAST WHERE THEY WILL TREE COON!!!!!!! PROBELY DONT HAVE THAT PROBLEM UP THERE THOUGH....

1) have permission to hunt
2) go where coon are
3) away from major highways

(optional)

4) bring portable gas grill
5) bring cooler full of (soft) drinks on ice
6) if cast prefer steaks, DON'T bring hot dogs!!!!!!

I'm going to insert #7 here

7. Stay with cast until hunt is over and get them back to club, or at least give them directions back to club.

All of the above and I will add
#8 Inform the property owners that you will be guiding a cast there.
#9 Make sure you are hunting an area big enough to make enough drops to complete the hunt.
#10 If you have a variety of places to hunt, try to pick the places that will provide the best hunting but also the ones that will give you enough time to finish the hunt and get back to the club with the cast to return the score card in on time.

Let them know that you will provide all that they ask as long as they are 1) packing a Honest coondog.Not a babbler, a fighter,one that will run offgame or a bunch of slick trees. 2)they will strike and tree their dog honestly.Not pitch it if they think they can. 3)Minus their dog when they've known its moved off the tree or they jumped the gun and struck or treed it to soon.4) Will take their minus on a slick tree and not try circle it cause there a woodpecker hole or just trying not to take the minus they deserve. 5) That the judge has the balls to make the hard calls and be honest on himself and the rest of the cast for the integrity of everyone at the hunt not just his cast. 6) They act like sportsmen. You will be cooking some steaks more times than not. Yet some people will try to get away with things if they can. It's competition, yet if you can't win honestly does your dog really deserve a C.W.??

...first and foremost........SAFETY.............for both hounds and hunters..........this means permission on plenty of land........no hard roads with traffic nearby..........no other foreseeable problems............helps if ya have a bunch of coons, too...........lolol................the late cast in the Comer, Georgia pro/am PKC hunt last Saturday was on my land.....they treed 6 and seen 4...........congrats to Brian Gilley for winnin' it...with his blue dog Rickey Bobby..........lolol

since you all are down on guides and setting forth all that is expected out of them.........how about listing what the guides expect out of the rest of the cast !?

I just like if see how you fellers know how to wear the other boot !!! LOL

i know i get stuck carrying the card and guiding more than than most.

I've guided some. Like many others have said, find a safe place for the dogs, try to get them in coons, and enough land to allow the dogs to spread out if they choose. I speak when I spoken to, and don't say alot. Some casts are pretty intense and its best to just go along and not say much. Also, try to stay out of any controversy. I try to stay back about 20 yds away from the cast, but in hearing range in case they ask a question. That's what I've done, but some might have other ways of doing it. I also help in rounding up the dogs after the hunt is over, and getting the hunters back to the club. Honestly though, most people have the GPS units now and can get themselves about anywhere they want anymore.

I try to do my best for hunters when I guide on a cast, but honestly what I expect a guide to do is get me to a place I can hunt safely and I'll take care of the rest. I don't need or expect a babysitter.

Get us to a place/places where you have permission.Most of all guide where there are coon or don't guide at all.
We'll find our way back to club house/home if after hunt we have to find our hound...if guide decides to stay thats a plus.

We went to walker days this past weekend at Ada.The guide took us to a place...the only place he had to hunt...hunted it 2 hours...our dog treed the only coon scored...pitiful...just pitiful....didn't bother with going back saturday night...drove the same distance...73 mile in apposite direction to Beggs for a pkc hunt...had a better time and scored on several coon.

everybody keeps sayin put them in coons. its nice but they aint always movin. i have had guides at the major hunts that are supposed to have alot of coon an tree one or not even make a tree all night. but you cant blame them. so buddy just make an honest attempt an thats all they can ask for.

KNOW the woods, area and roads around the area you are hunting,,,,,VERY important. You should guide somewhere you hunt often enough that you know what is in there: water, streams, swamps, hills, cliffs, yarddogs, hotwires, caves, livestock, etc, etc
Dont take a cast to somewhere that you aint familiar with period,,,,you are a GUIDE!
