Wierd happenings last night.

We had a good hunt last night but sure had something wierd. I had heard of this happening before but this was the first time I seen it happen.

First drop went well, treed pretty quick with a coon 1 tree over, same tree, limbs intertwined.

Second drop got split my dog and another female had one on the outside, male dog had a den.

We had cast my female from her first tree so she was struck again right after turning the male loose and casting from his tree, they worked up a cold track and got treed. They were treeing good and had been treed a little while before the young female joined them.

They had all been treeing together for about 5 minutes, and my gyp and the male had been there about 15 and when we got close to them both females left out running. Male dog stayed put. Got to the tree, where we know for a fact all three dogs were at, and there on the first limb sets a coon. Pulled him off and the two females were treed hard right around the ridge about 75 yards away blowing the top out of a big den.

The only thing that could have happened was that there were two coon in that tree and one of them bailed out. Remember they cold tracked to the tree, the one in the tree was on the first limb, and after being there 15 minutes my dog left out flying.

My brother had one jump out where they heard it jump out 10 years or so ago, jumped out of the tree into the creek when they were within 20 yards of the tree or so, but they heard it hit the water and the dogs killed it.

This one we were about 50 yards from the tree and didn't hear anything but two dogs that were well settled on the tree took out like a blue streak and treed real quick and real hard on a big den like it knew where it was going.

I just thought that was the only thing that could have happened, and thought that it was wierd that in all my years of followin dogs that's the first coon I ever thought bailed out without being shot/squalled out.

could have been that a coon bailed. we were running two young dogs with an older female and this happened. not only once but twice. all dogs were settled on the tree. we were headed into them and they all left. turned out it was an old boar coon. they finally treed him and kept him treed about an hour later down in a swamp. all said and done he weighed in at over 30lbs.

coon gone

Around 15 years ago i was in Wisconsin trying out a 7 year old hound for a pup trainer on a bright full moon nite.The dog treed and as the owner and i were walking into the tree i noticed the coon bailed out and ran up over a good sized hill.I thought the owner had seen it too so i didnt sayanything.The dog never noticed it either.lol.When we got to the tree of course it was slick.I told the owner what had happened and he couldnt believe it.We took the dog off the tree,he picked up the track,took it over the hill and put it in a hole.By the way,i bought the dog,he was my old Buddy dog.

Probably bailed...I only have seen one bail, it first climbed a small hemlock tree where my dog treed it, I was almost to the tree when it jumped and ran about 50 feet and went up a big maple tree. I heard it thump the ground when it bailed, it took a bit for me, and my dog to realize what exactly had happened.

Never try to guess why a dog leaves tree or etc. In a hunt it would be minused. Dont rack your brain over it just forget it. I have had several jump out over the years, but the one thing you can count on is once they jump out they are extremely hard to tree again. I once was hunting my old Arkie dog in a hunt and he split treed real deep. I went to handle him because all the other dogs were treed on a different tree. Well when I got to Arkie he was treed up a tree about as hoe handle about 7 foot up was a huge coon. After about 5 minutes the coon just bailed out and I sit there thinking about what I should do, but by the rules I couldnt do anything so I waited on the rest of cast to come minus my tree as a slick tree and for me to tell my sad story. After thinking about it, I could have just turned arkie loose on the coon after it jumped out and just took my tree minus but it would have been against the rules and i wouldnt have been able to tell my story. That was one of my lessons that I learned a long time ago, all you can do is call your dog and anything else is beyond your control.
