Ran our First

Ran our first lion up here in Iowa last weekend! I have a couple buddies that I hunt with that had a pack out runnin what they thought was a coyote at first. The dogs struck in and after runnin a little ways bayed up in a brush pile. My buddy wayne went in to bush the coyote out but what he got was a big surprise. What came out of the brush pile was a nice lion. He said he left his gun in the truck and when he seen it about peed down his leg. They ran it for a couple hours never got a shot at it. They said it never did climb up. But several guys out of our group got to see it. They told me this mornin that 100 yards is as close as the hounds could ever get to it. We are thinkin about takin some coonhounds down this weekend and try to get him jumped again.

Can you legally shoot a lion in iowa? Do you have an open season on them? I would talk to a warden first before i shot at it.

According to the DNR here in Iowa there is not a seson for them. They said they do not have a season because they are not here. Since they are not in Iowa they are not a protected species either. So according tho the DNR we cant get in trouble for shooting them. That is what I was told by a DNR officer. We have a open trainin season anyway. We can run the dogs year round just cant carry fireamrs for anything but coyote.

Same in IL, but even though the state says they ain't here, people keep seeing them. I've seen 2. Then when we report them the state says I'm mistaken, it was probably just a dog or bobcat..yeah right! They'll believe me when I kill one and go on the local news with it!!

They told us we were just seein things but that is ok. I want to see them back out of it when we have one hangin from the tree in the front yard! If we can get it treed!!

I would think you could tree one on that flat ground. It is possible that it might not have any climbers on the end of it's toes. Then again if it was a pen raised cat it does not seem likely it could outrun coyote dogs without some ledges or rims to help it out. I guess we'll have to wait and see if you guys can git him.

It's been my experience that if a lion trees and jumps it doesn't go very far, and the more that lion jumps the shorter the race each time. I have never had a jumped lion get away, ever! And if they are bayed up then they are bayed up and done, period.

The only exception to that rule or logical excuse would be a lion in rocky ledges, as they can jump off things that would or will kill a hound. But minus ledges and rockpiles, when a lion is caught that lion is caught.........

But I think the coyote hounds must have been a little scared of him. After the brush pile they wouldnt get close enough to bay him. they would stay about a 50 to 75 yards back and just keep pushin him. I suppose because they didn thave that much preasure on him he dicided he didnt have to climb. I dont know nothin about it and dont claim to. I just know they told me that they never did get him to tree. I know it was just about dark when they caught the dogs. So they had probably run yotes all day before this happened. I imagine the dogs were pretty well shot. 1000 acres is far from flat anyhow. But not exactly as big as you guys have out there either. I guess I could be totally wrong on everything I just know what they told me. Thought I would put it on here and see what your guys thought were on it.

Well Blaine, it could be those hounds were tired or they were reluctant to face bark an animal they had not been trained to hunt? Don't know, but I hope you guys get another chance to see what you caught and maybe some photos to boot.......good luck.

Blaine keep at that cat. I have used coonhounds to hunt mountain lion for over ten years now. Most I have used have plenty of grit to keep a lion bayed or make it climb. Your idea of using coonhounds should work, if you can get them to take the track.

Supposed to get some fresh snow tonite. Hopefully we can get a track found tommorow. Not havin any snow makes it pretty darn hard to find a track around here. I think that will try to hit the woods in the mornin and maybe get lucky to cut a track. From what I have been told I will be lucky if the cat even stuck around the area. Plenty of food for them to eat so they wouldnt have to travel to far.
