If in a 3 dog cast and all dogs are declared struck then two dogs are declared treed and the 5 minutes gets the other dog. after the 5 the other dog is declared split treed. when the cast gets to them the first 2 dogs and the other dog are split treed, but the trees have limbs that touch. coon is seen in the tree the one dog is on and nothing is seen in the other 2 dogs tree. the handlers of the 2 original dogs minus the other guys dog and plus there dogs saying that if the limbs touch the tree is scored as one and that he was shut out on tree. My question is: is this right or has anyone read in the rulebook that this can be done?

since the trees touch and it was scored as 1 tree, the single dog is shutout on the tree that is scored (since it's scored as 1 tree) and his points are minused. since the single dog was declared treed after the 5, his tree call is taken as a split call (125) and he is minused that.

did the cast decide prior to scoring the tree that it was one or two trees..

Only the cast members can decide if it is one tree or two. This should be done before you look for the coon.

If there is a real connection between the trees, ie; vines, limbs touching, etc, then it should be considered one tree and it was scored correctly. If there is no real connection between the two trees then it should have been scored as two trees.

i agree with you bill but the guy that this happened to said that he has never found it in the rules that limbs touching mean you score the tree as one. To be honest i cant find it either, even though we all know coons will cross out.

What Jim said is the key in this situation. Now the reality of it is this and this has happened to casts I've been on:

Cast starts to shine the tree and 10 is started. During shine time, cast notices connecting limbs when the tree at 1st before shining, looked as if it were 1 tree...

Now I believe how a tree is to be scored is decided upon prior to shine time by the judge? But what if the judge didn't initially see connecting trees?

ya but there's always a chance there's gonna be that 1 person in the cast that says something about the scoring of the tree being predetermined before shine time.

You can't always tell that trees touch before you shine a light on them. If the limbs touch it is scored as one tree. We had a deal at the Winter Classic once where three dogs were on one tree and mine was on another. They were both big oaks and both had coons in them. The limbs just barley touched the ends and it was scored as one tree. There was no way the coon crossed either tree but they did touch so I got third tree instead of first tree. Sometimes the breaks suck.

so if there is a limb big enough to support a coon score as
1 if not 2.common sense

The only difference is how the 3rd dog was treed. If he was called split before you walked in then he whould get 125 minus. If the handler did not specifically call him split then he should only have got 50 minus cause it was scored as 1 tree. It has been my expierience that if you never want to call your dog split unless it is absolutely obvious. If the trees wouldnt have been touching he would have been scored split either way. When asked if they are split I always say I am not for sure. Maybe this is not right but this is the way I have always seen it done.

I thought that when the five was up the only tree call the judge is allowed to accept is a split tree call. If the trees were touching there is no way you could declare an obvious split.

Acording to the rules any dog declared treed after the five has to be declared split. If you do not declare them treed then it is only minus the strike points if the coon is seen.
