I doubt any line consistantly produces dogs that excell at this talent. But some lines DO produce dogs that tree a larger number of coons without making a ground bark and there is a whole legion of coonhunters out there that believe those dogs are great layup dogs.
I've seen other breeds be bred to run with their noses up more than on the ground, or be able to run a track without sniffin the ground. They're faster track dogs and they're able to tree lay ups. Just figured someone out there has line bred a strain enough to produce dogs that have a higher probability of treeing lay ups.

I think there is a major difference between dogs that drift a track, straddle a track and dogs that are silent.

Had one a long time ago out of Houses Lipper. Treed a lot of layup coons. He hunted by drifting. Never put his head down.
You may not believe this but on the right coon he would locate fifty yards maybe farther before he got to the tree. Could flat scream a track. I know those coons werent laying up but it was awesome to watch him work.
Anybody ever seen one do that?

I've saw Nut tree as high as three a night several nights in the dead of winter(late december which can be very rough here) & never make a track bark & several socalled good ones never pull a tree bark on them so you tell me if this is layups? Also I might add Nut is a very open mouth dog that can absoultley run a coon to catch & has on many occasion& highly accurate. I saw him tree one on a RQE that 2 other GrNtCh's & one NtCh could't smell & never treed on either. He also treed 2 more singles (every coon seen in the cast) & qualified. Maybe it was just his lucky night, maybe not lol

Sounds like he was prolly layin 'em up. Seems lay up dogs will be treed and other dogs that aren't won't even know a coon is up there, but they might still be able to put up coon after coon on a night where they're out of the trees and runnin around.

He truly can make dogs look bad in the winter& is a coondog that takes his tracks as they come but doesn't need a track to tree coon. He by far was the best coondog at a very young age Chris & I have ever unsnapped & cannot believe how his pups are treeing so many so young. Were very lucky to have him & very thankful to the ones that believe in him & hunting his pups. If a big time stud dog man owned him that could draw the top reproducing females as some do it would be unreal what he'd do . There are many crosses that have been made where the owners tell us every pup in the litter are coondogs & he's only 5 & wasn't bred until granded out at 27 month old

j.....the difference is obvious. Salt Creek Jenny comes to mind. She was certainly a track drifter but she was not silent or even semi-silent. A dog can waller a track and do it silent. How much mouth threy buse don't tell you how they run a track.

We're actually not hunting him now until we get more semen collected & get what's booked bred & then he's going out west to a major studdog mans house where he'll be hunted up & shown to the public. This will absoultley be a huge boost for him as this gentleman has some top reproducing females of dogs that have won major hunts & in the top reproducers list also. This guy judged him in the world hunt & really liked him & he doesn't even like Harry dogs he said ,but he said he's the one lol. It kills my soul to see him stand in the pen though as he's a dog that acts like he lives to hunt & has drive to give away & goes absolutley bizirk over a coon & his pups are like him in this way also. They can be very hard to get off of a coon & better teach them what dead means lol.
