-- Garmin Long Range Antenna or magnetic Truck antenna? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=257471)

Garmin Long Range Antenna or magnetic Truck antenna?

I was wondering about range with these. Does the "long range" hand held antenna that Garmin has have more range than the magnetic truck antenna or are they both about the same?

Also, for those that use the 155 Yegi antenna, is it any better than the Tuck or Long Range antenna or is it just cheaper than the long range one by Garmin?

I already have the magnetic truck antenna, haven't had to use it yet, just wonderin if the long range one had that much more range than the truck one?

I have both, the truck mount antenna and the handheld longe range antenna, the truck mount consistently gets about 1.5miles more range (4.5 miles) as opposed to the 3 miles I get out of the handheld longe range antenna.

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

I was wondering if there was another level of safety to be had by getting the hand held long range, or maybe even getin a yegi like someone else on here had and hooking that up.

I haven't even needed the truck antenna yet, but I like to be prepared and I have had dogs get out of pocket before. Not so much around here as back home. I plan on going back home and hunitin in a couple of weeks LOL.

I've got both the roof mount and long range, the roof mount reaches out a little farther for me..
I think it's because it's higher up in the air??

The fellow from Kentucky claimed he received 8 miles or better with the yagi.

If he really did..You can bet Garmin will be all over it! I'll buy one also it I knew it would get 8 miles in north ga..

GA Dawg, from what I have seen here in these mountains (much bigger than north Ga), you won't have any trouble with the 30. I was amazed myself.

That said, you notice that I am stocking up on "insurance" plans LOL.

I am going to get a Yagi to go with my truck antenna I think.

And I won't be afraid to turn out back home, where I always used to hunt (which is more like NGA with thinner coon).

I was impressed with the hand held unit, and while I haven't tested the truck antenna yet, if it doubles the hand held, and if the long range doubles that then Quick Track/Tracker/Wildlife etc won't have any more range than the Garmin does.

I'll let you know what my experience is.

The very best my 30 has got is 3.3 miles..That was rolling hills..In the steeper woods its got about 2 mile this is with the truck mount..Its still about 1 mile further than the 20! I'll have a yagi if it will even get 4 or 5 miles in the woods!!

I'm getting up to 7 miles with the roof top ant.

guys the Yagi works

i have a garmin mounted on a yagi in my box just for insurance
i also keep 1 on my side and another mounted in the truck

i was the one that got 8.23 miles with the yagi
i was tracking a DC20 and a DC30 . i constantly stopped all along the way to see if i could get it in different spots. the only spot i couldnt track the collars is when i stopped in a hole with a steep bluff in my face . but i drove right up the hill and picked them right up. that was at about 6 miles.
i feel confident i could have picked the collars up farther
the yagi antenna concentraits the signal more to one spot unlike a non directional antenna. you can also tilt or turn the yagi while pointing in the collar direction and pic them up faster

I am in pretty good hills in S.C.. I got up to 9.02 miles on the yagi running a test. IT WORKS!

Posted by EddieM. on 02-17-2009 08:21 PM:

I haven't seen any yagi's for sale - who has them?

Posted by bmcgee28 on 02-18-2009 02:13 PM:

Ya where can you by the yagi antenna? or is it the same antenna as you use on like a wildlife box..?? confused

Posted by Rip on 02-18-2009 02:14 PM:

Yes, you can buy them from anybody that sells trackers, just make sure they are 152-155 range (the frequency the Garmin uses). You may have to buy a cable adapter, depending on what that particular Yagi you bought uses to connect with.

I was just wonderin if the Yagi had enough more range than the Long Range antenna from Garmin to justify getting the Yagi since it will run about 90 bucks and the one from Garmin is 60.

I have a ? I know its a dumb one, but here goes. How do they set the feq. On a yagi antene? It just looks like allumanum and coax to me. I undestand how the tracking collor works just not the antenna.

I think it might..I dont hear from anybody on here getting anywhere close to 9 miles with anything else..Go get one and let me borrow it

LOL.

If I get one I will definately let you in on it.

However, Lee Stocking on this board hunts stuff like I used to hunt, very rough, very thick. I never found anything in the Dalton/Chattsworth area that was even close to it.

He has had good results too.

I have used my Garmin a couple of times now. My Tracker is for sale, I like it that much.

I hope I ain't singing the blues when the leaves come on LOL.

Well I'm in Dawsonville! My range really sucks here.I think I might have a bad dc30...Just tonight..With the truck ant..I could only get 1.14 miles. Then walking in.I didnt have her at .58 had my buddies old dc20 with cable ant pretty much the whole time..Came in and just now tried to take plate off dc 30 to make sure ant was connected good..Stripped one of the dang screws out trying to get it out and DIDNT get it out..I think I'll call garmin tomorrow and try and send this dc 30 back!!!!!!! Chaps me when a 20 out performed my 30!
