Indiana Dog Owner ALERT!!! ACTION NEEDED

URGENT: Responsible Indiana Dog Owners/Breeders Needed to Help Stop Breeders Bill on February 11

[February 11, 2009]

The Indiana House Courts and Criminal Code Committee has agreed to hear a proposed amendment that would require any breeder who owns 10 or more intact female dogs over four months old to register as a commercial breeder. The amendment also bans ownership of more than 20 intact dogs that are a year of age or older.

This last-minute, proposed amendment would be placed into a bill regarding animal cruelty.

It is imperative that all responsible dog owners and breeders in Indiana contact the members of the committee and tell them to vote NO on House Bill 1468 Amendment #1!

If adopted, the amendment would, among other provisions:

Require any breeder who owns at least 10 intact female dogs over 4 months old to register as a commercial breeder and renew the license each year.
Ban the ownership of more than 20 intact dogs over one year of age.
Establish strict engineering requirements regarding enclosures for the animals.
Allow local governments to adopt stricter laws than those outlined in this amendment.

How You Can Help

The Committee will meet today (Wednesday, February 11) at 1:30 p.m. Please contact the committee immediately and politely, yet strongly express your opposition to Amendment #1 to House Bill 1468.

Whats wrong with the bill? I think if you have that many dogs the state should check you out to make sure the dogs are treated well. Most people I know that have 20 dogs have tham tied out to cars, there ribs are showing, and there stacked 2 foot it crap...

The problem with the bill and 20 dogs is if you have 5 adult dogs and two are females with 8 pups each......you want to keep the litter until they are a year old or better before you sell all but 2 or 3. You farm out the pups to friends around the state. The puppy police check records and see that you have these 21 dogs.....BUSTED. You have 21 dogs intact.

Trumbo...

Read carfully...it says BAN...that means, it won't be legal....

Now I sometimes fall into the situation where with the collection of old dogs that I have, and two, sometimes three litters of pups in the spring....I have more than 20 dogs...and I don't have any with ribs showing or tied to old cars.

The issue here is that there are already laws on the books to regulate pu;;y mills and the types of things that you talk about...called animal cruelty laws....don't go stepping on my toes, or your toes if you decide to raise some pups....

Whats wrong with this you say?I don't see anything right about taking our rights away,I don't own 20 dogs either, but I don't like someone telling me I can't.Houndsman need to stick together and watch each others'backs instead of trying to stab each other in the back or animal ownership as we know it will be out-lawed.....JMO

I think the main problem with this bill is that they get a little at a time and we dont need to give an inch on nothing involving dogs. It is only a starting point. in 2-3 years it will be 5 couple more years after that 2 and then eventually none at all. Dont give an inch on these dog bills. Its good to make sure all these are taken care of, however, its only a start to limiting the number of females a dog owner can own.

I think that's what it boils down to. Some people have no business with that man dogs, but there are alot of people that have no problem feeding and tending to that many hounds, and they're the ones that will suffer. If a bill like this passes, it sends into perpetual motion many different opportunities to limit your rights as a dog owner. JMO

It is more then just your opinion roosterrun if people don't stick together and fight such attacks on our rights. It will be a Fact.

For someone that is into this sport and loves it and trying to breed a better hound. It isn't hard if someone raises a litter or two of pups and keeps some young hounds to get close to 20 hounds.

I have seen people with one or two hounds have a dog with ribs showing and in a foot of dog do. It isn't the numbers as much as the people who have the hounds.

Don't think that if you let the govenment stick their nose in your business that is none of their business, that they won't want to stick more then their nose in your business.

Also keep in mind that this bill isn't about 20 dogs, it OUTLAWS 20.

It forces people with 10 females over 4 months old to register and pay the fees of a commercial breeder, so it's really saying they want to regulate people with 10 dogs PUPS INCLUDED.

I only hunt females, I usually keep 2 when I am hunting alot (not been able to do that in a while). This bill would in effect keep me from being able to wait untill the young dogs are showing anything to make my decision if I had a litter of pups to go with the two I have (that's 8 females, not hard to do with 2 litters). I would be considered a commercial breeder, have to be inspected, pay for liscense etc.

Nope, this is bad all the way around. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the humane society and the HSUS have their hands all over this one.

Allow local governments to adopt stricter laws than those outlined in this amendment.

And if this language does not scare you into action....it should!!!!!

So this ammendment basically says that the numbers above are a starting point....

They could make this three dogs....two dogs...or ONE DOG...if they so choose without any significant input.....

If your local township government decides they want to license fees, and pay for the local animal shelter, they could say that if you have ONE female of breeding age, you have to register....

As distasteful as this is for me as a breeder....it is even more distasteful as a dog owner....and it should be to all of you...

20 dogs one year old or older is alot and should be banned. The 10 female thing is a little strict though. Joe have you ever had 20 dogs that were a year or older? I doubt it. There is no need to have that many dogs. Unless you have a kennel that has been checked by the law and verified big enough to handle 20 dogs, it should be illegal.

Dave,

I respect your right to have your opinion...but you need to move west across the border into Illinois, into the land of the "regulated".

This isn't about me, or how many dogs I have. Yes, I have indeed owned 20 dogs a year old....but that is not the point. There are already laws on the books to deal wth the mistreatment of animals, there are already laws on the books about inhumane housing (having dogs tied to abandoned cars).

This is about my RIGHT to own, breed, hunt, care for, and be a responsible dog owner. I don't need the government telling me how many dogs I'm "allowed" to own, as long as I'm taking care of them in the manner that the law prescribes.

I can agree with you on this, though I would like to see tham get stricter on people who do not take care of theres. I know you work out of your house and have time to take care of a lot of hounds but some people around here make me sick.
