Good Hunt vs Bad hunters

We had a good hunt last night, but the hunters didnt do so good, we turned out just after dark, the dogs struck a cold track after a few minits and we moved to get closer. The two year old English male , cold trailed up a small branch about a 1/4 mile from where we cast and treed, so we went into him and he had treed up a very large oak tree, we look hard for the coon and finaly my friend saw the coon, booth eyes, but the coon quit looking, then he looked again after a few minits,so my friend called for the gun.
well the other guy had left the gun leaning over buy another tree so he had to go and find it. so while this is happening the coon quits looking now this is getting to be very frustrating for sure !
well , we keep looking for the coon. my friend had lost his timothy Ball coon sqauler so we didnt have anything to make the coon look and no vines to pull in close proximity to the coon. we see the coon a couple of more times but cant hit the broad side of the barn with a single shot rifle lol my pup is trying to bark at the tree and i incurage him as much as i can, but we cant get the coon out to him or the other dog because we cant see him long enough to shot him out or make him move. finaly after spending well over an our at this tree we give up and go to the truck
some times it just ant the dogs falt lol
oh well that one will live to tree another day
P.S next time ill take my rifle and i will have a coon sqauler

anyone else had a hunt like that latly

we was shooting a coon out one time and he got hung in between a fork when coming out, we tryed to climb and get him but it was not happening.... we even tryed shotting it more but that didnt work neither....

That is why I like spot lights! I say let there be light! That way ya don't need an eye to see.

As far as leaving a gun behind, I really like the rifle sling I have on my .22, so that would be a none issue too. I could see one of my boys forgetting the shells though.lol

Aim small miss small

About a week ago my female went in deep and got treed like she was supposed to. Coons wern't moving to well so she went and found one. When I finailly got to her she was in a big cottonwood with vines all up and down. Hard to get into her so I just went in and petted her up good but did not leash her so I didn't and to unleash after I shot the coon out. I then crawled back out and look at the coon again, put the clip in the gun jacked a shell in and looked back up and he was gone. Started looking around and when I got around the other side seen the coon running down the creek. Then Jade took off after him and ran him into a tile about 75 yards down the creek. I was pretty mad.

Theres nothing wrong with leaving a coon alive in a tree. I walked away from 30-35 in kill season. And yes, I had a young dog along that I am in the process of starting. One coon out of ten is plenty. The dogs dont need the coon, its the kill frenzy behind the trigger that gets the thrill. For what? 6-8 $'s? If a coon not hitting the ground affects a dog that much, They are lacking in heart and drive. I doubt your dogs will be set back any. They need to learn to walk away from a coon anyway. If you have any plans to nite hunt, Remember, No guns allowed. Happy hunting.

One night I was by myself Leading 3 dogs holding my light and carry a gun at the same time. The older dog hit then the others chimed right in. They carried the track a good mile. I wasn't far behind them trying to keep up with them. Got to the tree there sit mr coon. Shot the coon and he got stuck in the fork of the tree! Dang i was fustrated. I couldn't get him out. I patted my dogs up and told em i was sorry. Both of us did our part but the coon was stuck dead in the tree.

dogs treed one last night and I let my boy shoot him out he didn't put a great shot on it but enough to make it start climbing down. I told him to reload his single shot as quick as he could (I wasn't carrying a gun). Then I saw that hole the coon was climbing down too. It was about 12 ft off the ground so I quickly found a long stick and tried to get him off the tree before he got in the hole but was too late. He went up the hole about 4 ft and I could even feel him with the stick but couldn't get him drug out. Blood was running down the tree, but he never did fall out! We were both upset over that one.

SOLUTION #135

There's a way to solve the problem of shooting a coon only to have him hang up dead in the tree.
See pic below.

get some reflective tape and put on the gun. its a lot harder to misplace one when it shines from you light.

Sometimes all you can see is the sights and lose the coon (at least I do). It's better to leave my light on dimmer on the sights and have a buddy with a spot on the coon.
