Ivermectin kills many kinds of parasites in LIVESTOCK.........not dogs! In dogs it just kills heartworms. It doesn't get hooks, rounds, whips or tapes in dogs. That is why HeartGuard Plus has Ivermectin AND parantil poamate. The ivo gets the heartworms. The pyrantil gets the hooks and rounds.

Jim not to conterdict what you are saying but Im not forsure if Ivermectin kills all the heartworms or not. I was told by a vet it won't kill the eggs but does the adult. Thats just what I was told.

I do use Heartguard plus and have my hounds checked yearly.

So not sure whats in Ivermec that gets all heartworms plus eggs.

Jim, Im sorry but Ivermectin does get alot of other worms in dogs. Been worming pups as young as 4 weeks with it for over20 years with beautiful results. It can also be used a few days in a row to get harder to get worms.

Droncit kills tape worms. Not ivermectin. Tapeworms come from flea larvae. The dog has to ingest the larvae. Tapeworms can be two feet long, you usually only see the segments. Looks like rice in the feces, or on the hind end. Dogs should be treated once then again in three weeks.

Posted by juliemule on 02-08-2009 09:03 PM:

Ivermectin does kill lots of parasites. However be very careful with the dose, as dogs can easily be killed by it. Collies and shelties especially. It is much safer to use a dewormer dosed for dogs than take chances on overdosing and losing a dog worth something.

Ivermectin will not kill tapeworms. I agree with Jim, from all I have read and researched it should be used as heartworm prevention only in dogs. It kills the microfilia (babies) in the blood stream. It may be somewhat effective against roundworms, but there are other wormers much more effective.
If you need to get rid of Tapeworms, use Praziquantel, it can be purchased in many forms at farm supply stores. I would lean against using the horse paste with Praziquantel because they will contain other wormers and it is not possible to get the proper dosage of each wormer as they are dose for horses.
Praziquantel is the active ingredient in Droncit, D-Worm and Trade Winds.

Ivomec won't kill adult tapes but it will kill the microflora. It will kill everything else. I haven't had a dog positive for any worms except tapes in close to 20 years and all I use is ivomec unless I have tapes. My vet also told me the same thing.

NO..Jeff it want get tapes..I do believe it gets others because I never have any worms in my dogs and ivomec is all I use!

Same here... but I'm willing to research it with this many people saying otherwise. Time to switch wormers? or add another

Vet showed me right out of the book Ivomec is not effective against whips or tapeworms. it also said no reproductive problems.Book also said for use in hogs, cattle, poultry, fowl & believe it or not humans. For heart worms give onehalf cc a day for a week, skip a week then repeat for another week( to get the new hatchlings). If you've ever had one treated for heart worms the active ingredient in it is Ivomectrin & a half cc a month for fully grown coondogs will not harm them. The reason to give in one week increments (for heartworms) is to not kill all the worms at once & if you do & they have them really bad the dead heartworms clog the bloodstream & this is what kills the dog.

Thank you everyone that said something intelligent. There is a thread like this all the time and a bunch of people who act like they just fell off a turnip wagon. Ivermectin will not get tapes, it will get alot of other worms. You have to be smart enough to read directions for horses and base those instructions down to a dogs weight. I would highly reccomend noone that cant read or has to ask for instructions on internet, please do not use it as you will screw it up and then blame the wormer.

BACK TO TOP!!!!!! WE NEED MORE INPUT FROM THE LOCAL YOCALS COME ON!!!!

Posted by Oak Ridge on 02-09-2009 01:19 PM:

Okay...

One more time....

First, go read this....

http://thecoonden.com/dog-health/do...-treatment.html

Then know that Ivermectin, and Panacur, or a combination of Ivermectin and Panacur will NOT, and I say again will NOT kill common flea born tapes.....

And for the 100th time...do NOT go out buy Zimectrin Gold thinking you've found the most inexpensive way to treat tapeworms in your dogs. Sure, it's got the right ingredients, but the combination will overdose your dog on Ivermectin!

The reality is that Dronatol plus is a good choice, but can be pricey if purchased directly from your vet. The active ingredient for tapes is praziquantel . You can buy this drug over the counter for about $15.00. I HAVE FOUND NO CHEAPER SHORTCUT TO TREATING TAPES....

What all does

Drontal Plus take care of? I use Iver monthly for hrt worm and worm with safe guard paste products for other worms..

Can I substitute the paste with Drontal plus and can I just use the Drontal Plus instead of the paste?

Thanks
Winston

Posted by Oak Ridge on 02-09-2009 03:55 PM:

Drontal plus does not have ivermectin in it...

It is a combo pill with three different medications in it praziquantel, fenbendezol (panacure), and the same active ingredient in Nemex.

You can indeed just give Dronatol plus...but you still have to treat monthly for heartworm.

i lost 2 d*** good blue heelers several years ago due to this very thing. they had heart worms really bad ( unbeknownst to me )and i gave them a sheep wormer ( ivermec ) and i spent a ton of money trying to save them, but couldn't and that is what the vet told me happened. when the worms broke up it stopped their blood flow to the brain and caused their brains to swell up.

Ok with that being said when you are treating for heartworms according my vet that is...you have to keep them confined where they aren't getting to exicted and running around as this will cause them to pump more of the dead worms through their system and increasing your chances of clogging their blood flow.
