Shootin coons out

Whats everyones opioin on shootin the coon down and letting your dog chew on it. Do you let them chew on the coon everytime or do you let it chew on the coon just once a month and pet them up every other time.

I pet mine up every time and if im not at one of my honey holes I knock em all out during kill season

Posted by goneblue on 02-08-2009 12:24 AM:

i let the dogs chew on everyone they tree its part of there reward and then pet them up. and i pet them up at the box and after a good job of hunting at the end of the night

Posted by dpbigd on 02-08-2009 12:49 AM:

which way is a better way of rewarding your dog. Or maybe I should say which way produces a better coonhound?

Posted by PlottChaser on 02-08-2009 01:03 AM:

I pet mine up on the tree. Then, if I'm serious about getting the fur, and I'm by myself, I tie them back and shoot them out. Dogs are hard on fur. The only time I don't do this is if I got somebody new to the sport with me, which I have a couple times a month. Then I let the dogs fight them. It's part of the fun and excitement for someone to get to see the fight. Never had a dog want to quit treeing or chasing coons cause they didn't get to chew fur every time.

I shoot the coon out so as not to kill it. Just enough to make it mad or to make it loose its grip. I let the dogs kill the coon every time. Amazing fight to watch! My buddy shot one last week through the back theigh the dang thing came down the tree and jumped into the middle of his dogs. Now that was a good fight!

My opinion let em kill the coon every time you hunt them. A coon can take a .22 cal in the rear and still have a 30-50 min fight in him. It'll make your dogs want the coon more and you will enjoy watching your dogs at work!

That is your opinion and everyone is entitled to there own. Some people just feel they have the right to insult others because there opinion is diferent then theres. My dog's job is to do exactly what he is trained to do. Just because you choose to hunt one way and I another doesn't make the coon any less dead at the end of the night.

You are new2cooning. I hope you change your opinion or quit coonhunting altogether. If I ever wittness you doing these things you will have more than a coonfight on your hands.

New2coonhunting....Everyone has an opinion, but I will tell ya if youare new 2 coon hunting, you will ruin more young dogs after being chewed up than you will help. The dogs getting chewed up to make em hunt better is a old wives tale. I've been coon hunting 25 years, and dont think i've ever witnessed a 30 - 50 min fight even if the hound happens to catch a big male coon on the ground. Your probably just talking mess on this computer like the rest of us though...lol. Good luck with your dogs.

People should insult others for doing unethical things. Actions like that are why one day hunting with hounds will be a thing of the past.

Development is why we won't be able to hunt with hounds anymore. More and more sub-divsions less and less farms. I use to be able to hunt 6 different farms and not drive more than 15 miles from the house. Now I have to drive 30 to 45 min. from the house just to hunt and keep seeing more and more houses pop up and less and less woods to hunt. Every time you turn around someone is hollering to get out of here and a few idiots that fire guns at you even when your not on there land. Theres nothing worse than taking your kids out to show them how fun coon hunting can be and get them involved with the sport when some idiot blast off a gun and scares your kids half to death. Then the next time you try to take them hunting there scared to go. Thats why I'm trying to find a club close to home so my kids can get involed in the feild trials. I've had a coon hit the ground not completley dead before. But as long as my 5 and 10 year olds are with me I want them dead. Coons can get crazy after there shot.

Posted by Tim Trone on 02-08-2009 05:53 AM:

i have some young boys that go with me a lot and i use to let them shot the coon out but they dont try to knock it out dead so they dont shoot anymore . i do the shooting .they dont like it because when i shoot it is coming out dead. i dont want my dogs wore out . had a coon put a whooping on 3 dogs one night you couldnt hunt them for a little while. hiting the ground dead here.

Posted by Eric Sawyers on 02-08-2009 06:02 AM:

I agree with Elvis......

Unless you have a sorry dog that only trees a coon a time or two in a month of sundays, we're going to have to start managing our coons around here. If everyone shot out every coon they treed it wouldnt be long we wouldnt need a coondog.

(fight them all)

i try to kill all the coons in the tree but some times it just dosent happen. i like to see a young dog fight a coon 1 maybe 2 times with older dogs. but i have seen some guys just junk a dog on doing that. and i dont even like for my dogs to really fight a coon all they have to do is stop him from runing im the one with the gun. i wount keep a dog that keeps putting his head in a meat grinder that just stuped.( jmo lol)

when I shoot a coon out which is a rarity, I try my hardest for that dude to come out stone cold dead each and everytime. It doesn't always happen but I sure do try.

coon

i dont knock everyone out to them kill season i do more than usual i just did this with my pup the other day first won he tread by himself i knocked it out second on same let him have both third one i knocked out and didnt let him have it cuz he was a little loose on the tree next one he locked on hard and didn't move an inch but in my opinion you shouldnt knock out every coon your dog tree's because then in a hunt he might go back to the same tree lookin for a knock out coon

I shoot them out dead also, after 4 yrs my dog still hasn't figured out there are teeth in the front end. Everytime it doesn't come out dead he goes straight in head on. He gets the job done, but I don't like running the risk of something happening.

Posted by vampire on 02-08-2009 11:13 AM:

I don't kill every coon, but if I do I try to bring them out dead and the dog chews on every one. A live coon can ruin a young dog in a heartbeat or fire them up. It's a tough call sometimes. I've seen it help and hurt.

You ain't paid for enough antibiotics and watched one with the paralysis.....or maybe sent a dogs head to be tested by vet order.....Once you do that a few times you'll realize there is a better way.
