Bladder infection help
Our westie house dog has another bladder infection, does anyone have a idea of anything we can do to help her from getting these. We are buying bottled water and getting strict on her diet. How knows an additive to her food or water that will help her urinary tract. Thanks if anyone can help.
Check with your vet, I believe the drug is called Nexcel (sp?)
taking her tomarrow, but with all the dog people on here I figured someone would know something that would help daily
Feed her cranberries. Put a small handful in her food or give them as treats.
Make sure she has fresh, clean water and ample access to go potty. You don't want her holding it for very long.

Make sure the vet does a thorough physical exam - it is not uncommon for a female to have a stricture - an extra little flap of skin up inside the vulva, that prevents the urine from completely draining out, and that little pool of urine in there gets stagnant, and can trigger reoccuring bladder infections. It's a pretty easy surgical fix - they just remove the tissue causing the blockage.
The other possibility is that whatever antibiotic you've had her on has not done the trick - knocked down the infection but not fully cleared it away - the easiest way to deal with that is to have the vet culture the urine, and that will tell him exactly what is causing the problem, and what the most effective antibiotic will be.
With any kind of infection, it is really important to take ALL of the antibiotics the vet prescribes, even if the dog is better, or else if the infection re-occurs, it is much harder to deal with the next time, and leads to drug resistant infections.
