HELP!!! Sick Dog Question???

Got a 2 yr old male that, until 4-5 days ago appeared fine. In the last few days, he's gotten lethargic, weak in his back end, and seems dizzy. Hasn't affected his appetite, still empties out with no difference in consistancy. I noticed this evening that one of his back feet was swollen, and I squeezed a splinter and quite a bit of fluid out of a lump between his toes. Could this be all that's wrong? Planning on getting him on antibiotics tomorrow, but I'm wondering if this is coincidental, or the cause of his symptoms. Any and all imput appreciated. Thanks, Cory.

might be coondog paraylsis,

I didnt notice what part of the us you are in. Could a Locust thorn do this? or there are ther types of thorns that have poision on them as well.

Did he seem affected from the rear first? is so it COULD be from the thorn.

I would also check him over VERY WELL for any bites or wounds.

Sounds like has gotten to his nerve system. Might want to take him to the vet to be safe.

We did get treed in a locust patch about a week ago; my buddy ran one through his new waders. Lost the thorn when it came out, but it may very well have been a locust. Hadn't considered that until you mentioned it, thanks. Planning on trying an antibiotic for a few days unless he gets worse suddenly, then we'll try the vet. Haven't had much luck with local vets, so I'm a little skeptical...
Had a beagle shot in the face, a bluetick with a dislocated hip, a walker with a snakebite in the throat, and another bluetick with a twisted bowel. Two different vets, all dogs got same antibiotic in same doseage. Doesn't give a guy much faith in doggie doctors.

check his temp if he has a bad infection he should have an elevated temp 100.1 is around normal.

I had a filly that got one of those locus thorns in her jaw. Her face swelled up like a balloon ! She got real lathargic. We took her to the vet thinking she had an abcessed tooth or something. After ruling out a bad tooth and then other things, the thorn was dug out of her face. It had such a clean entry that it went un noticed at first. The junk that came out of her face was absolutly horrible. The thorn broke into several peices as it was being dug out. It was about an 1 1/2 inches long total. She was put on some antibiotics for the infection and was fine afterwards. It left a big nasty knot on her jaw for several months. We were not sure it was ever gonna look normal again. Now you can't even tell anything was ever wrong.

Good luck, I hope that is all that it is.

Seems a little better today. Does anybody know how long after contact with a coon it takes before onset of symptoms for coonhound paralysis? Also, does a dog actually have to be bitten to contract the disease? Thanks, Cory.

Posted by ItsOlMander on 02-05-2009 04:04 AM:

hope this helps

Coonhound paralysis is suspected to be associated with an overstimulation of a dog's immune system, which may be secondary to contact with a raccoon (and especially raccoon saliva) or another stimulating agent such as a vaccination, a viral respiratory infection, or a viral or bacterial gastrointestinal infection.

Signs will begin 7 to 14 days after contact with a raccoon or other stimulating agent. Initially, affected dogs have a stiff-stilted gait in all limbs that rapidly progresses to various degrees of limb and body weakness, or even paralysis. Voice loss or voice change is also a common early sign. Occasionally, dogs develop weakness of the facial muscles. This will consist of drooping lips, sagging eyes, and an expressionless face. Breathing difficulties may develop in severely affected dogs and, on occasion, this can lead to a complete inability to breathe. Signs progress for 4 to 5 days (occasionally up to 10 days) before the disease stabilizes. However, most dogs will not show immediate improvement in strength at this time. Muscle weakness or paralysis will continue for several weeks and perhaps for up to 4 months. During this time, affected dogs will lose considerable weight due to general muscle wasting.

Despite severe signs of weakness (or even paralysis), most dogs remain in good spirits and continue to be responsive to their guardians, even being able to wag their tail. Affected dogs will also be able to eat and drink normally if given the opportunity and will be able to urinate and defecate However, some dogs may be unwilling to perform these tasks in the first few days of the disease.

Bet that's it... website description was as if it had been written while evaluating my dog! From the site recommendations, guess there's not much a vet can do, but I may take him in a few days anyway.
Thanks everyone for all the help!!!!!!!!

One of my hounds came in limping one night,we had knocked a coon out earlier that evening but the next day his front foot was big as a softball.I thought he got snakebit and put him on antibiotics for three days and the swelling went down and he looked better but when we took him again he went hunting and made one tree but the second tree he was'nt there and we found him stretched out in a field. He was down his backend and could'nt get up.He stayed weak in his backend for about a month, lost alot of weight etc.Took him about three months to fully recover,he is doing great now but I am really not sure what happened to him.I don't belive it was snake bite.Sounds alot like your dog

my

buddy had a 4 year old walker and he had blood clotts push threw his lung.. he started acting weird in his back end but never thought anything about it.. we hunted three nights in the role before he died and the first two nites he hunted every breath and the 3 rd nite he really didnt want to come out of the dogs box and kinda acted weird in his ass in.. went out to get him the next night and he was beating his head on the side of the dog box and couldnt stand up.. we got him out took him to the vet as soon my buddy could get him there. the vet gave a iv in him and a morphin shot and the next day came in he was no longer with us.. he said he cut him open and he had larger tumors passed threw his lungs.. everybody weve talked to that has hunted said theyve never heard of such.. But thats what the vet said..

might be coondog paraylsis, or a bad ear infection ive had dogs to have both and the coondog paraylsis will make a dog weak and he want be able to walk, and the ear infection will make him look drunk and dizze he look like his head is heavy when you turn him out the pen he will run and go head first on the ground.

TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET! It amazes me how many posts have to do with my dog is sick what should I do? I understand some of the less serious questions, but something like this shouldn't even be posted. Just take the dog into the vet unless you aren't concerned with its life in which case just shot it and put it out of its misery.

Vet's aren't always the magical answer, I'm not saying that it shouldn't be taken seriously and may warrant a vet visit, but he said himself that the local vets aren't his favorite & he hasn't had much luck with them. I'm kind of spoiled, we have a great vet and I wouldn't think twice about hauling one of mine in for something like this. But some people aren't so lucky....

Nobody knows your own dogs like you. If you think he is bad enough to take to the vet, or its life or death, please take him in!

If it is Coonhound Paralysis, there is no lab test that can confirm it and no treatment other than to make sure that the dog can eat, drink and go potty (and make sure he is comfy ).

Otherwise, take him in for a blood test, they may come up with something that would rule out Coonhound Paralysis.

Good luck with your dog.
