Coon feeders????????

Ok guys I have had excellent luck in the past using dog food and 5 gallon buckets but unfortunately dog food has went sky high!!! So i have tried mixing coon potion, shelled corn and cattle pellet feed in buckets with 1" nipples and they have been out for about 2 weeks with no luck getting them to eat!! I was just wondering if maybe it was the time of year or if the 1" is not big enough for a coon to get his hand in to get the feed out. The only reason that i used to 1" is because i thought the corn would just run out of anything bigger. Any advice would be appreciated! Normally dont use feeders but I have a young female that needs good consistent tracks. Thanks

Nat, We have a few out also with corn in them. They arent hitting ours either. So if you find out anything let me know. But I think our problem is others coming in behind us packin led.

Dollar general dog food ............ $ 4 for a 20 pound bag

Grape kool aid .......................... $ 1.50 for enough for 4 buckets

This will bring the coons

i use soured corn then buy cheap vanilla extract over the corn seems the cheaper extract has more odor. i have no trouble bringing the coon to the feeder and move them around constantly

we have a place near us that sells candy that don't pass inspection at the factories. Find some food making place like a candy factory or a bakery and buy their old or products that don't pass inspection for cheap and the coons will eat that better than they do dog food. Also coons like peanuts so if you have a peanut factory close to you coons love them and they will crack them open themselves and eat them good too

feeders

nothing works like out-dated hostess pies and twinkies-you can get them at your local hostess dealer for 10 dollars a truck load

a little while back I started mixing "deer corn" with dog food. Around here, deer corn is whole corn coated with molasses. I mix it with Dog Chow, 50/50 mix. Coon seem to love it. You'll get squirrels messing with it though, but it's allot cheaper than straight dog chow.

Go to your local bakery outlet and see if they sale day old or feed bread. Once you start using it that is all you will use. Like most I have used dog food and corn. Neither compare to old bread. A five gallon bucket with a hole cut in the bottom to keep water out of it and in about three days it will be empty. I have to put two buckets in most spots and even have a 25 gallon barrell in one spot. You can get a truck bed full for about 10 to 15 dollars. I also get alot of little cakes and sweets when I buy it. Coons love it. On one hunt we had three coons treed and scored in 31 minutes at three different spots. With three good races. All dogs worked together.

4 cups of sugar
2 cups of water
1 and a 1/2 cups of light corn syrup
put all of it in a pan bring to a boil for 20 to 30 minutes not burning only works if its 270 or hotter
Than mix u in some mollase I have used koolaid grinded up dog food
Than put it in a small bucket I use the ones that the bug candles come in the little buckets and make sure you oil than up and line them in wax paper put a lag bolt in the middle pour stuff in and let harden up for a day than you have a feeder that you can screw in a tree I use a coordless drill than just screw it in than after its gone go back and screw your lag bolt out and reuse

will any other critters eat the dog food kool aid mixture????

Posted by Mike Mills on 02-03-2009 12:23 AM:

Just buy yourself one good COONDOG and forget the feeders. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Posted by SOUTHERNSTYLE on 02-04-2009 12:43 AM:

Mike

some of us like to start pups not just have bucket dogs!!!!!!! Yeah I think I have seen some opposum eat off the dog food. You better get rid of em too. They will just sit and eat forever!

Posted by SOUTHERNSTYLE on 02-04-2009 01:18 AM:

why

I hardly ever read a post on this website that dont have somebody post some smart mouth response! Kinda funny.....

There is something that will eat all of that stuff in one night and that`s my problem BEARS!The one thing that has worked best for me is taking an old tire on a wheel use a 1.5 or 2 inch holesaw put about 5 or 6 holes in the sidewall and cut a tree off that will fit through the center of the wheel about 4 feet up and slide the wheel and tire over it.You can get one of those plastic water cooler bottles and cut the bottom out of it and use it for a funnel to put your feed in the tire. The bear and hogs might eat a little but they can`t carry it off.I had some 5 gallon buckets of liquirish and one week went by went back to hunt and there wasn`t even a sign of the buckets.

matt

Is right now a good time to have feeders out with all the bad weather ????

Posted by Marcus McDaniel on 02-04-2009 07:42 AM:

RITE NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE FEEDERS OUT. NOTHING FOR THEM TO EAT TILL THE FROGS COME OUT IN THE SPRING.

Posted by SOUTHERNSTYLE on 02-04-2009 04:20 PM:

Soured corn

The only thing about the tire deal with the holes is souring it before you put it in the tire or let it sour in the tire????

The mighty "Coon Potion" is not what it is kicked up to be!!! Waste of $25 in my opinion!

Posted by mjflores on 02-04-2009 05:08 PM:

I'm not a fan of coon potion either. It's not soemthing that can sustain a coon, only real food will. Part of putting out a feeder is placing something in it that will keep coon around, help them get through a winter, have larger litters, etc. A feeder should be looked at as a training tool and a way of boosting the coon population in a training area.
