-- Two different type of tapeworms? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=253721)
Two different type of tapeworms?
Are there two different types of tapeworms, and if so, do I need two different types of wormers? The local vet said there was only one type of tapeworm, but I see references all the time about tapeworms, and then the 'flea tapeworm'...and does panacur take care of all worms but heartworms or not?
My understanding is that there are 5 different type of tape worms. Panacure kills 3 of the different types.

I've seen 2 different types but like Bill said, there are more. Lots more. If my vet didn't know there were more than one kind, I think I'd be looking for a different vet.
Praziquantel (Droncit) will get them all. That's why I use Equimax to worm with. Cucumber tapes were hard to get rid of. Funny looking, though. Fresh segments looked like little black-headed maggots. Dried, they looked a lot like cucumber seeds. Guess that's why they're called cucumber tapes.

You know what you call a vet that graduated at the bottom of their class???????
You call em' "Doc".....
If your vet told you that there was only one specie of tapeworm that affects dogs.....Time to get another vet.

Okay....
I realize that there are folks on here that "do it all the time", but smokers "do it all the time", and that doesn't make it a good idea!
Let's break down the ingredients in a tube of Zimecterin Gold.
Each tube of ZG contains 567mg of praziquantel and 113.8mg of ivermectin
If you give your dog enough of this paste to take care of the tapeworms (recommended dose is 3 to 3.5 mg/pound) you would also be giving it six times the recommended dose of ivermectin at the same time.
Now consider this...ZG is 1.55% ivermectin.
Equimax is 1.78% ivermectin, and 14.03% praziquantel. Each syringe contains 120.1 mg of ivermectin and 897.6 mg of praziquantel
If you were to give your dog the recommended dosage of praziquantel from this tube, you would still be giving the dog six times the recommended dose of ivermectin
The LD50 (lethal dose in 50% of the test animals given overdoses) of ivermectin is between 5 to 25 mg/kg, or 2.5 to 12.5 mg/pound.
Just something to think about....
