Car Sick
I've got a 16 month old female out of Rat Tat...
I didn't own her until she was 10 months, and have just started working her hard the last 2 months...She will track with other dogs to the tree, but not tree (Strange for a Rat dog I know), but I'm ok with that for now...
Here is the problem, she get car sick something terrible....I have prolly rode her over 100 miles now, and she has spent over 100 hours in the box...If anything it has got worse more than better...She will yack if she has eatin within the last 12 hours, and if not, she is still bead sick, and you can tell it....This is ruining everything, I'm not making much progress training because she is turning into a completely timmid dog because she is afraid every human she sees is gonna stick her in a dog box...I know this sounds extreme, but I promisse it is that bad... I hate it because she was a very un-scared, lively playful dog...Until the constant riding started...Everyone keeps saying just keep throwing her in there, but I honestly think I am starting to do more harm than good...Her mouth starts slobbering as soon as she gets on the tail gate, and by the time she is in the box she has slobber hanging 6" off her mouth, scared to death.... Not scared at all of coon, or anything else except a gun shot a little, not bad... But She is as scared of the dox box as I have ever seen a dog scared of anything...She would attempt to fight a grizzly if it would keep her from taking a ride...
Please help me fellas....She is a good enough pup, she will load on first command, even though she and I know what is gonna happen...
if there is any way you can lay off for a bit ......... take out the box and (if it isnt too big) put it in her kennel, or a place where it can be used as her house. Replace her house with the dogbox and feed her in it.
If that is not fesable, then try this(and be patient it may take a while) Feed as close to the same time everyday that you can....and instead of feeding her in her kennel you can do it one of 2 ways.
1 over an amount of time, take to feeding her closer and closer to the dog box/truck so she knows it isnt so bad.
2 simply take to feeding her IN the dog box( when feeding at the same time everyday, so she is hungary).
you can also take to putting her in the box during random times of the day, even when you arent going anywhere. for short periods , so she dosent have time to get uncomfortable.

I like to let pups once they reach 4 or 5 months old spend time in the dog box without the truck moving. If you are at home for 2 or 3 hours, just stick them in the box. The more time they spend in there, the more it becomes a good place instead of a bad.
thanks ladycoonhntr,
I have tried putting them box in the basement and locking her in it at night so she will sllep there, and I noticed she wasn't afraid of it at all in there... She hopped right in and laed down...No slobber...
But when it is in the truck, She starts slobbering all over herself as soon as she gets in...
Just today I started loading her at feeding time, driving her down the road 400 yds, turning around, feeding her in box, taking her back to kennel in box, putting her up....
She was slobbering like crazy after the whopping 1/4 mile ride, I fed her, we rode back (real slow) and I saw no slobber when we got to kennel...
she really loves to eat something crazy, so I thought this might be a good plan...Thoughts?
It also helps to ride them with another dog in the same side of the dog box. They learn from the other dog that everything is going to be ok.
thanks jack
i would try just feeding her in the box IN THE TRUCK for a little bit, then work up to .....say giving her the food ,then moving the truck and see how she dose. If you know she REALLY likes food then you can use that to your advantage.
I have one that used to do that, get real carsick and now she only freaks out a little when its time to go somewhere. once she is in the box she is fine, she just dosent like the "preparing to go" part.
You dont have a diesel truck or one with loud or dual rear exhaust do you?

Ford Expedition, actually an SUV, so the ride is very quiet....
She will still load when I tell her to, but you can tell she doesn't want to, she will lag behind when we get clost to the truck...
She drowns the floor of the box, just slobbering and slobbering where she is sick...
neutral88-
sent you a pm.
if she is gun shy and you are having all these problems, there is only one way out being a walker

get you some of this:
http://www.jefferspet.com/ssc/produ...p;pf_id=0029759
I have used it on several of my dogs because they do the same thing. it took several months with the first one to overcome the slobbers. I would not feed prior to travel and give the dosage as listed. I have also given 1/2 CC the day before travel, 1/2 cc day of and 1 cc about 1-2 hrs before you leave. it will take a while but when the dog realizes they wont get sick in the box, they will begin to get better. It may take 2-3 bottles to solve the problem. Never did the feeding in the box.
