Does anyone know what dog the first UKC dual grand champion was? and who it was owned by?

that question came up from a young coonhunter in our area and I'm trying to help him out. thanks!

Good Question

Good Question. That will take a little bit of research. I would think it would have been in the early 60's.

I bet it was an english dog. Doesn't the history say that the first hound breed recognized by UKC was the english dog?

From UKC web page:

The American Black & Tan was the first coonhound breed to be admitted into the registry with UKC. When they were first registered in 1900, and for several years after that, they were registered as American Black & Tan Fox and Coonhound.

I was wrong again. lol.

I think you have to look past these great dogs. They were offspring off other really great dogs. I'm thinking it is probably a Black and Tan or a Redbone. Just a guess. I'd like to think it was a walker but I don't think it was.

We are remodeling so the material I have that may answer this question is like when you are out hunting. Someone asks if you are lost and you answer no, I just don't know where I am at, at the moment.

It could very well be a walker. It would have been in the 60's when UKC started awarding Grand Champion Degrees. Before that people would advertise how many Champion hunts or shows they had won. I just don't know for sure what year it was? Todd?????

I know there were Grand Nite Champions in 1965. But then Deep River Mike and Katie's Rowdy were Grands. They won the ACHA World in 60 and 62. But back then people would still campaign them after winning such a hunt.

I would think the Grend degrees started between 63-65. I think is was AFTER 63.

That is a good question. I can't find the answer right off but I'm guessing HistoryNutt is very close on the time frame being the mid 60's. The GrNiteCh degree did not even come out until 1964. The first CH titled dog was in '47 (english dog) but can't find when the GRCH title was first available? For a long time CH NITECH was as high as you could go.

I'm going to make an educated guess then I'm going to try to run it through the system and see what I can find out. I'm going to guess Dale Brandenburger's Pioneer Drum.

Sorry, but no. The Black and Tan was the first recognized and registered with UKC. All the way back in 1900, I believe. The English was 3rd & redbone 2nd.

The English was the parent breed of the blueticks and treeing walkers for if those dogs were registered in UKC they had to be registered as English until the 40's or 50's when they broke away from the English.

Here are the years in which these breeds were recognized by UKC...

Black & Tan 1900
Redbone 1902
English 1905
Treeing Walkers 1945
Blueticks 1946
Plotts 1946
Leopards 2008

Of course that doesn't answer the original question. I'd love to see what Todd finds out....
